New IC's - making an immediate difference
« on: 9 Jan 2009, 10:33 pm »
I was advised to let these burn in but immediately they have so much heft in the midrange and added bass it is unreal.

Sorry, can't reveal yet.  Maybe tomorrow after the GTG folks get to experience them.  I might do a cable swap very unscientifically to see if folks can hear a difference and it's not my imagination.

I'm a little dumbstruck right now with what I hear.  No alcohol involved, honest.

Congrats  :thumb: I will be curious what they are. I had a very similar reaction to the KCI Silkworms recently

have you played with the impedance settings? That has always intrigued me.

have you played with the impedance settings? That has always intrigued me.

I set them up as recommended by their supplier.  You'll have to ask Jim and Mark Seaton and others how the sound changed when I took them out.  Jim was saying that the highs were not what he was used to and thought the amps were to blame or something else.  It could be the impedance setting on the amp cables, but the old cables sprung the highs back quickly and I could see the look on Jim's face.  But for me the bass loosened up and the midrange got thin.  So they are not suppoed to fully break in for 200 hours.  And the highs are supposed to open up over that time, so I want to run them in this week to see.

I hooked just the DAC-Pre cable back up this morning and left the JPS cables on the amps and it was a good marriage of both.  I think I will try the amp cables at medium versus low impedance setting to see if that changes things.  All I can say is that these things really affect the sound in a good way and if the highs come back to ribbon status then I will be thrilled.  The bass was authoritative and the modrange had depth and body like crazy.  Plucking guitar strings never had so much "bass" content before.  Very cool.

According to Joe Abrams, all cables smear the sound because all frequencies separate along the wire and then become spaced out versus aligned for arrival at the correct time.  Those little black boxes supposedly realign the sound.  Intersting to see the faces of the folks in the room when they knew I was changing them right before their eyes and that the sound changed so much.

Well the rack is on the side again so I needed 15 feet and went with BJC 4S11 Canare right now.

The sounds will level out... This just happened to me. I just re-wired some IC's I had to use a connector not used in them and until they played a little things were a tiny bit dull but mid and bass bloomed.

Really nice now after 100+ hours constant running.  The highs are where they should be and the bass is still amazing.  Really nice cables.  I'd like to try the speaker cables, but still a little pricey.

If you scroll up about 4 posts you will see a picture of the cable with the model printed on it

Thanks. I saw that pic but had a hard time making out the details. All I could read was Shotgun S3. I've got it now.
