BluRay sound track?
« on: 9 Jan 2009, 02:14 pm »
I am trying to get a friend to bring over his bluray and watch a movie. I have a decent plasma and a an HK635 which would have an opticial line to bluray for sound.

Will I be able to notice any difference in PQ and SQ with a bluray machine on my setup?

I am totally in the dark about the subject.

Thanks

The new surround Codecs are a significant step up as they are "lossless".  1080p reproduction is dictated by your equipment, but once you go there 720p is for kids.

I definitely enjoy Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio over Dolby EX, etc.  Careful!  This will end up costing you money!! :green:

ROTFLOL..... Ahhhh just as I suspected, maybe its a good thing he cant make it this weekend. Hehe

Does that mean my dated reciever wont be able to partake of any difference in SQ.

Thanks!

Correct.  If the player decodes it it may show up as Multichannel in the processor's display, assuming the processor recogizes it.  My Onkyo SC885 Pro processor does the decding via HDMI connections.

I'm not sure if you will hear a difference with an optical interface between the Blu Ray and receiver.

You reallly need a receiver with HDMI to support the lossless audio soundtracks, there is too much information to send over optical or coax, needs to use HDMI.

The other option is if the Blu Ray has 5.1 or 7.1 outputs, and your receiver has those inputs, then you can let the player do the decoding.

A quick search reveals my tv is 720p and my reciever doesnt have hdmi. Therefore I guess the bluray would only be a fancy dvd player in my system :(

Gad zoooks, this upgrade would cost a fortune. No wonder I have had my head in the sand the last few yrs. Guess I just missed the 1080 curve.

Well I guess now is also a good time to confess I am still on a Pentium 4.  :duh:
