Audio Track can't be removed from Hard Drive
« on: 8 Jan 2009, 01:58 am »
I've spend the last night and today restoring my library that the repairman tech accidently erased. I had to transfer the backup files twice as the fiest time, the transfer was canceled due to a corrupted file in my L's. I didn't catch the problem the first time so not knowing what went wrong, I needlessly started all over again. Problem is I can't get rid of this file from my exterior hard drive. I've already redownloaded the track but I can't paste it into my backup HD because of this corrupt track(it won't overwrite it). I'm at a loss as to what I should do. Everytime I try and send it to the Recycle Bin, I get "Can not delete track 5: The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable." I get the same message when I try and rename the track, thinking that maybe by renamiing it, I can at least backup the good track.

So can anyone give me a clue as to what I can do. It takes me a good 6 hours to transfer my backup and this 1 track directly in the middle of my library is a PIA and it needs to be removed. :cuss: So any help ould be greatly appreciated.  :)

Cheers,
Robin

Three little words: Move On Boot

http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Boot-Manager-Disk/MoveOnBoot.shtml

MoveOnBoot allows you to copy, moves or delete files on the next system boot. This comes in very handy, if you need to replace or delete files which are locked by other applications, loaded into memory or cannot be changed until next system boot.

Only 1 problem with this I think, my HTPC will not beroot with the external Hard Drive on. I can only fire the HD up once I'm on my desktop. Yeah I know,,, another issue. From what this tech told me, I'm loaded with these little issues but he said if I can work with what I have and I'll be rebuilding in a few years, I might be better off just living with what I have. He said to work thru all these little things would be time consuming, in other words costly.

I can't see this program working with the hard drive shut off during the reboot. What do you think? Thanks for the advise! :thumb:

The only other solution I can think of is to use a Linux disk. It is kind of geeky but not to bad.

You will have to download the Ubuntu .iso and burn it to a disk, Ubuntu is a complete Linux operating system on a disk.
Once the disk is made hold F8 while booting and select the disk drive to boot from.
Hopefully the USB  ports work and the external hdd is recognized.
Navigate to the corrupted file and delete.

Ok, I just realized this is real geeky. Lets move on:

Solution #2

Copy files up to but not including the corrupted file,
then all the files just after the corrupted file.

Here is a program that will do it automatically:

Solution #3

Use Ycopy
http://www.ruahine.com/?ycopy_version=1.0d
Ycopy is a free file copy / data migration utility. In short it is a utility that helps you copy files from one disk to another. When it encounters a file it can't copy it makes a note of it and then moves on to the next file.

I downloaded MoveonBoot and tried moving the file there but when I tried to remove it, I got the same exact message as I've been receiving. I never made it to the actual rebooting. So the MoveonBoot wasn't the answer for this problem regardless.  :dunno:

Now to remove it.

i'm not 100% sure i follow you, but based on what i think you're saying you have two separate hard drives. one hard drive is your music source and an external drive holds the backup. you can't delete a corrupted file on your external hard drive which is causing issues for you. if you're at a loss and already have one drive in place with all the files and no problems with said files, i say format the external and re-copy everything to it from your source hard drive. again, just my opinion as i'm not 100% sure i follow the problem.

You got right Kevin I have 1 internal 750G HD for my library and 1 external 750G HD for back up but I'm not sure I understand "format the external". I can erase everything on that external drive but that 1 track will still be there so why bother erasing my whole backup if that's not going to solve the problem? I suppose I could start another file and cut everything but that 1 track to a new file,,, just thought of that but this doesn't really deal with the problem of discarding the 1 corrupt track. What it might do tho would allow me to backup that 1 bad track,,,, maybe. But at the least if I ever have to use the backup like I did yesterday, I could do 1 transfer w/o any issues. :dunno:

Robin,

If the file is corrupted, which it appears to be, you will need to let Winders fix it. The easiest way to do this is right click on the drive in Windows explorer (my computer), select properties and then the Tools tab and click the Check Now button. In the resulting dialog box that appears check both boxes as this will attempt to correct not only the file errors but any disk errors it encounters.

The downside - for large disks this can take a LONG time to run and will make your machine very slow while running. Start it and go to bed, it might be done in the morning.

The upside, it will either fix the file or if unable to recover, it will remove it.

Thanks Mike, sounds like the easiest way I've heard yet. For now, I simply opened another file and transferred everything but that 1 album, Laverne Butler: A Foolish thing to Do. I was then able to back up that album in the other file w/o a problem. Probably never would have thought of doing that if Kevin hadn't mentioned "format the hard drive" which got them rusty gears amovin'.

Nice that you figured it all out, having a current backup always gives me a contented, warm fuzzy feeling.

I hear ya. When you've got 5200 albums, it's simply too big of an investment to not have safeguarded. I'm actually running the ErrorChecking now. Even at the risk of slowing me down, I couldn't wait to see if it'll solve my error problem. :hyper:

Glad it helped you Robin. It's not a bad idea to do this on your drives from time to time as it can often recover corrupted files you didn't even know where corrupt. ;)

You're reading my mind Mike, I'll be doing this to my 2 internal hard drives in the next 2 nights. :thumb:

You have to right click on the drive you want to check. Double click 'my computer' to open it and then right click on the disk you are interested in such as c:. Note if you want to do a full check on c: it can't do this while the OS is in use, it will ask if you would like to schedule it for the next reboot.
