What did you say, Mel?  Speak up, I can't hear you.

If anyone's ears ring after listening at loud levels, they have suffered more hearing damage, in my non-professional opinion.  Regardless, I love to crank it up at home, but I bring foam earplugs with me when I attend live amplified shows or any event with a DJ, just in case, since I can't control the volume in those venues.

I was eight years old when I started shooting. A different era, then, and the first time that I fired a shotgun, I wasn't offered, required, or wearing any hearing or eye protection.  I am sure that I suffered some hearing loss over the years from shooting and from working on boats and spending some time in the engine rooms.  Since hearing damage is cumulative, I always wear hearing protection when I shoot or when I operate machinery, even the snow thrower.  I also find myself frequently asking my 12 year old daughter to turn down the volume on her iPod (oh, no, I've become my father!!).

You guys will be happy to know we got together tonight, rocked out and did not go past 1 "O" clock on the volume knob! All is well!! Good night!
But, if any of the "Tower Of Power" fans want to come over, it could easily go pass the 1 "O" clock mark! I am ready to rock!!!! but i wont.

Funny, I have the reverse problem. I would prefer to keep the levels down to protect my hearing but while listening to great music, the sound of AVA equipment is SO good that it's hard to keep it at a low volume.  :)

Giant fuses   :o

My goodness, 30 amp speaker fuses.  Not a great idea.  This guarantees any fault will destroy speakers and likely amplifier output circuits.  As Wayne reported, a 5 amp quick blow fuse is plenty for sustained 200 watts into 8 ohms.

How much is 200 watts?  Turn on two 100 watt light bulbs, let them warm up for 10 minutes or so, then grasp one firmly in each hand and you will promptly understand that.  Would your speaker voice coils like that?  Can you fix them with a quick visit to the emergency room for burn treatment?

Driving a Ultra Double 500 very hard sustained will raise the heat sink temperature to about 75 degrees C, half of the device ratings.  That's enough and a 6 amp quick blow fuse allows that.  More is just way overkill.

Please don't do that.  Your system and your warranty will suffer.    :rules:

Frank Van Alstine
