Neo 8 as midrange and tweeter
« on: 6 Jan 2009, 07:05 pm »
Hi Danny

All the best for the New Year!

I wanted to know if the Neo 8 would be ok as a tweeter as well as a mid range, I like the low fs of the Neo8. adding a tweeter would make things expensive. Can you or any one else help me. the woofer iam using is good to about 1.5k and i have read good reviews of the Neo 8' mids and highs.

Thank you for your help,

Regards

Stuart

Yes and no. It can be used to cover that range, but as a single tweeter it will have a very limited vertical coverage range due to it's long length. Using a single one as a tweeter also requires the use of a notch filter to remove a 13kHz peak.

I'd go for a single Neo 3 pdr with deep back cup. It will reach down to that crossover point just fine (but no lower) without the limitations of the longer Neo 8.

Thank you Danny,

Would the standard Neo 3 be better because of its high spl and di-pole use. these speakers will be used as Studio monitors and the main 8" can handle
150watts contin and massive tranient peaks.

How high is the SPL level of that 8 incher?

I would imagine that the pdr version would be your best choice.

The deep back cup version allows it to act as if playing in free air and also allows a little better low end roll off. It should be your best bet.

Hi Danny,

The Driver is the Hi Vi D8.8+ and has a spl of 87. Do you know this driver, it is a clone of the Dynadio drive unit. I have heared it with one of their Planer tweeters and was amazed at the speed, dynamics and bass out put. From reviews, your neo 3 looks better than their planer tweeters, with smoother responce.

That looks like a fine driver but may only have 84 or 85db sensitivity once you adjust for some baffle step loss.

My issue with the large voice coil Dynaudio drivers were that they sound really lifeless until you get a lot of power on them, then they start to open up. I don't know if this Hi Vi driver will have the same issues.
