Anyone using an EFIX USB dongle to build their own Mac?

This is all I ask of Apple. Let me build my own computer!

This device appears to work. Its $200 then add a new licensed OSX Leopard OS-DVD which is just about $120 and you have yourself a Mac at a fraction of the cost or more importantly its overclockable.

$320 for a gadget that isn't guaranteed to work with future OS updates doesn't make a lot of sense to me, at least if you're looking for a small music server like the Mac Mini. The price differential to get a genuine machine isn't all that large to begin with. Though it's unfortunate we'll have to wait a few more weeks for news of an updated Mini.

Plus, you don't really need the gadget. If you hunt around you can find hacked versions of the OS that one can get running on most machines without the need to buy an adapter. In particular, the MSI Wind netbook mini-laptop works surprisingly well and now has a driver for the internal wireless.

Check out this thread http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=62705.0 i've managed to run OSX on a PC by just buying a legit copy of OSX.

Hacked OS’s can’t obtain apple updates. You have to hunt for cracked updates and so on. No time in my life for that nonsense anymore.  This device tells the OS that you’re legitimate. The device is also flash-upgradable so it can be updated to conform to any changes Apple may make and as new hardware is introduced. Unless Apple puts then out of business through costly law suites my guess is that they will be around.

Point is I can build a computer that is TWICE as fast then the fastest Mac money can buy for half the price or less. Besides the motherboard and video card, I already have everything including a QuadCore2 CPU that runs happily at 3500MHz X 4 with memory bandwidth that’s off the scale.

I’d dual boot with Vista64 as well. Not giving up MS but would love to toy with Leopard. Building computers is fun. To me buying a premade computer is like buying a console stereo like a Bangs and Olufsen or a mini-system. No fun.

Since I installed a retail copy of OSX 10.5 Leopard (not a cracked copy), I don’t have problem of updates from Apples website it works just fine. I started with 10.5.1 and now I have 10.5.5 have not tried 10.5.6 yet.

Yes you are correct I cannot update firmware but that’s no biggie for me as mostly everything else works.

The fun here is getting it all to work.

That's for sure. Did this about 2 1/2 years ago as a think piece and haven't used it since. I just wanted to see if it could be done.

And it is not done with a dongle, that would be cheating. (Check out what processor Tiger is running on).

Of course running Mac OS X, legit or otherwise, on any hardware other than Mac hardware is a violation of the EULA.
