FS: Rawson Gainclone (SOLD)
« on: 5 Jan 2009, 06:02 am »
For sale is a Rawson Gainclone stereo power amp based on the LM3886 chip.  Each channel has its own amp module and is powered by a single SMPS.  It gives approximately 40w/ch.  Asking $100 shipped from VA.

Pics?  I know each Rawson amp looks very different.  Some have solid tops, some have acrylic, some have wood sides, etc.

Pics.  The power supply is a Lambda +/-45V model, which I replaced some caps with Nichicon Fine Gold.  Resistors on the amp board are all PRP resistors with Ilinois Capacitors.  Note that this is a power amp, so no volume control is on it.  The only issue is the front blue LED does not light.  It was annoyingly bright to me, so it may be a good thing.  Otherwise, it is pretty much as shown.  It's not the best looker, but it functions perfectly.

I'm interested.  Could you take a pic with the top popped?

I hate LEDs.  Every amp I get from Tim I ask specifically to not include them.

You're a tough one to please  :duh:

There is plenty of room on the right side to add a volume pot if needed.

I'm surprised no one else has snagged it yet.  I don't need it but if no one else wants it I will take it.

A little abnormal, but how about this, if no one else wants to buy it by Friday night PM me and I will take it?

So if someone else comes to their senses and realizes what a deal this is, great they got a great amp for a great price, if not...I will have a great spare for a great price.

P.S.  Sorry if this approach is a little strange, the problem is it really is a GREAT price...I just don't have a use for it right now.

Sorry Gaara, but it looks like the first person to contact me about the amp a couple days back confirmed the purchase.  So, it'll be tentatively sold for now.

yes, i am the "tentative" purchaser.  i need this like i need another hole in my head!     but, i presently have a rawsonte lm1875 based gainclone, which is about half the power of this one; i am curious to see if this one is better driving the mid-bass driver in my 3-way active system...  not sure if i will really notice any difference, as we're talking about 80-300hz w/a 100db-efficient 15" driver...

For the price why not try it?  Your better off then me, I would be comparing this Rawsonte 3886 to...a Rawsonte 3886, only diff. is the PSU.

If the mid-bass is lower then 8ohms it should be a improvement, the 3886 chip is great w/ a 4ohm load, and I was under the impression the 1875 doesn't do to good below 8ohms.

You could always sell it to Gaara if it doesn't work out  :green:  I think regardless of sensitivity, some drivers do like to have power behind it.  I find that the case with my 97db 15" coaxial driver, although it uses a passive crossover that may suck up some of the power.  It'll be hard to say for sure wthout trying it though.

guys, iam not sure what impressions i will have w/this amp.  as it is, i am using my (~20wpc) lm1875 rawsonte gainclone on a 15" 8 ohm 100db-efficient fostex driver which resides in a modified klipsch lascala bass-bin.  this is part of a three-way system, and the bass-bin presently is running only from 80hz to 300hz (subs below and oris/fostex horns above).  i got this amp to replace a wintage refurb'd electrohome tube amp, as it seemed a waste to use up a nice tube amp for 80-300hz.  (the 20wpc gainclone worked great as a replacement, but don't ask me to tell you i heard any differences between it and the e-home!)  i will be sure to post any impressions, but, as in the case when i replaced the e-home, i dunno if i will actually be hearing much if any differences.  but, as this amp is actually cheaper than the lm1875 i got directly from rawson, and it has twice the power, like oatmeal, it yust seemed like the right thing to do!   :green:
