This is what the movies are all about, in my opinion.

I give this one a 4.6/5...what a wonderful experience in my home theater!

That could be all the difference for me in loving or liking this movie. It was a grand epic, best seen in theaters or good home theaters likely.

I saw it on a 8" screen on the back of a plane seatback with my Westone UM-2's on.  A different experience to be sure.

I'd probably have loathed Star Wars and Terminator 1 & 2 is seen this way, too

slumdog millionaire a grand epic?     more like a recycled canned-typical-predictable formula-based ho-hum mildly enjoyable way to waste a coupla hours, imo.  yes, i saw it on the big screen. 

i never saw any terminator movies; i fell asleep during the original star-wars at the big screen in '77, it was so boring and canned-typical-predictable.  never saw any of the sequels.  (or "pre"-quels?!?)

there's a lotta garbage out there, seriously.  i took a hiatus from watching movies; i doubt i watched even five between 1980 and 2006.  (except for a handful of animated childrens' fliks i watched the first half of this decade, due to having youngin's.)   due to the influence of my domestic associate, who is a movie freak, i have started watching again, two years ago - i realized it's good to share your partner's interests, when your own are so out there!     thank god, she prefers off the wall indie and foreign films - far more enjoyable than most stuff made by hollywood (or bollywood).  yes, there's some hollywood stuff that's decent, but most is garbage.  the fact that something as predictable and formula-based as slumdog millionaire could actually win a best picture oscar, let alone even be nominated is all the proof i need.  i know why i didn't miss watching movies for the past 25 years or so...  and i certainly know why i haven't missed watching tv for the past 35+ years...

Oh yeah, I get in a lot of trouble because I refuse to watch movies at friend's houses if it's one that *should be* watched on a proper HT or at the movies. I didn't think I'd feel that way about Slumdog, but glad I saw it here and not sans-sound system   I think the overall intensity of the film was heightened quite a lot with the HT!

Dude, if you can't get into SW back in '77, the Terminator films, AND you watched only five movies over a 26 year period, I think it's safe to assume movies just aren't your thing   Stick to books, maybe?

I wouldn't call it neither -(epic or garbage).
Simply, one of the better movies last year and nice break from Hollywood pollution.

On my scale - 4.5 stars
Definitely worth the time - which will not be wasted as oppose to posting in "Circle" that is not my field, specialty or even the form of entertainment. 0 stars for

I put this film in my queue on Netflix some time ago and it arrived this afternoon. It just so happens that I am on page 111 of the book also.

This evening my wife and I watched it and agreed that it deserved all of the praise and awards it has received.

You may call it formula but ever since Shakespeare and Conan Doyle, you would be hard pressed to find an original story line. What it has is beautiful energy, a fresh approach and throbbing passion. Take the soul of it and forget the lyrics and plot. Those are just upholstery. This gritty, vivacious little masterpiece owns its moment like little else I've ever seen mentioned here.

After weeks of not having the time to rent/watch movies my wife and I finally saw Slumdog Millionaire last night.  No doubt about it, it is a very special movie and I agree with a 4.5 star rating.

Yeah, we finally watched this movie this weekend too and agree with most of the assessments that it was very good.  The brutality of the India street children's lives is certainly vividly portrayed and while a little formulaic, I can overlook that slight flaw given the overall excellence of the performances, cinematography, storyline, etc.  4 out of 5 stars from me.

Just curious...for those of you who have said this movie is "formulaic", can you identify a couple of other movies that you consider to follow the same formula?  Because asides from the idea that Slumdog Millionaire is a love story about a boy trying to find the girl he has loved since childhood, I can't for the life of me think of what "formula" is actually being followed in this film.

i give this movie a solid 2.5 stars...   mindless formulaic entertainment - poor guy wins contest gets rich gets girl...  seriously - was there one wiewer of this movie that didn't know how it was gonna turn out at the end, even half-way thru?

Did you watch it in reverse?  Because he didn't win the contest until after he got the girl...this was a major point in the story

And again...what other movies do you consider to have followed the same formula?  The movies I've sen where the poor guy wins a contest gets rich and gets the girl, the guy gets rich at the start of the movie, and then the movie follows how empty his relationship is with the girl (because all she wants is his money).  Not like this movie at all...

love stories are fine, as are happy endings.  and, i thought the movie was entertaining.  but, this movie was way too predictable to be called a great film, imo.  but, what do i know?  it won best pic of the year...
