Active Crossover Suggestions
« on: 31 Dec 2008, 05:29 pm »
My dbx Drive Rack PA has proven to be noisy. I like all the functional aspects of it and would like to find a product that does all the same. I have ordered an Ashly XR 1001 analogue crossover to experiment with but would like suggestions as to the best options for an ultra quiet digital option to replace my disgraced dbx.

My modified Behringer DCX-2496 is dead quiet on 100db speakers.

I seem to remember the stock unit being very quiet as well.

Maybe Mike G. can chime in and give his thoughts.

I've got a stock DCX2496, and like it very much.
It's running OB subs and IB subs, and it only handles content below 80Hz, so that may not be a fair test.
Soon, I'll be using a PC as the remote interface.

Overall, very happy with the unit.

I read a lot of commentary before I bought the dbx. It is supposed to be a significant step up from the Behringer, although I saw no mention of comparison to a modified version.

My noise isn't overwhelming and can't be heard with even low level program material but it is apparent when the house is quiet. It sounds like what you hear when you put a seashell up to your ear but it isn't loud even when I put my head in the horn.

My wife complains about it though so that's the reason for this thread. I should probaly just get her some earplugs or earmuffs or an Ipod. I'm sure that would be cheaper.

If you like the unit I wouldn't part with it.

The DSP boxes aren't used correctly by most audiophiles I'm afraid.  You should probably use a multi-channel volume control downstream of the crossover OR use some fixed attenuators (6-10db) on all the outputs to force the signal levels higher and greatly reduce the "idling" noise you hear when no music is playing.

Cheers,

Dave.

Davey's suggestion is right on the money.  Some kind of analogue attenuation after the crossover would likely fix the problem.
