Missing parts on a VALAB NOS DAC question
« on: 31 Dec 2008, 06:28 am »
Hi all

This guy ordered a Valab DAC in November and then a UPGRADED (1ppm clock version) in December his upraded Dac didn't sound as good as the original, when he took it apart he found it was missing the 2 orange pieces on the bottom (check pics and story below) what are these pieces ??

                                                                                   Thanks!!

"My second Valab ( 1ppm version) is still not sounding as great as my first one does. That first dac (late November version) sounds superb, even better now i dug out an old Versalabs Woodblock and a Harmonic Tech power cable for it ! , its really quite magical.
USB out Foobar WITH Asio4all IS the way to go , on XP Asio4all or similar to bypass the dreaded Kmixer is a Must

This USB -I2S- dac thing really works

Anyways I pulled both dac boards out to have a look see . The first dac has two extra parts on the underside !( orange colour) not present in the newer dac. i have emailed Kevin about them and what they do but no reply as yet.
Anyone know what these 2 parts do ?Other than that the parts are the same ,except for a changed heatsink on the dacs and the new 1ppm clock crystal. its soldered same too.

Those are capacitors, would need to see the other side to know what they do, but if there are opamps in the circuit they may very well bypass the feedback resistor, which in my experience does help with high frequency sounds.

What is missing (sound wise?)

Hey Bill, thanks for the feedback, It is not my dac I'm asking for help for a guy on another forum (mine will arrive soon so maybe it will also help me  :thumb:)  Here is what he said about the sound of the new DAC

"still it does not quite have the IMPACT , spaciousness and general 'rightness' to the sound of the burned in dac ... yet.  But it never did burn in to match the old dac, I will get him to post up some pics with the dac flipped.   Thanks again  8)
