McIntosh Pan Locks?
« on: 30 Dec 2008, 12:48 pm »
I bought a vintage McIntosh 6100.  This is the first time I've owned a product that doesn't have a button or a switch to power up the unit.  So not knowing any better I push both pan locks thinking one of them must be the power button.  I had no idea that in doing so it would result in cracked glass.  :(

So what are these pan lock buttons for?

The Panlock buttons lock the unit into the wood cabinet.  They are purely mechanical.  It has been a while since I used them but as I remember, when locked the buttons will be "in".  To unlock, push the buttons in further and release.  They should pop out further at this point and then you can pull the unit out of the cabinet. Some equipment cabinet doors work in a similar fashion--push in and they pop out.  I used Panlocks for a decade and a half and never cracked the glass.  Sorry for your misfortune.  Fortunately McIntosh seems to have a good supply of replacement glass (even for vintage equipment like the 6100) at amazingly affordable prices.  If you replace the glass be sure to replace the lights at the same time.

I also had a 6100.  As I remember, the power switch is part of the volume control.  There is a distinct click when you turn the unit off (all the way counterclockwise).

Thanks Don, I'll contact McIntosh about getting new lights and glass put in.
