Farewell Freddie

The last high priest of bebop trumpet - dead at 70yo
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freddie_Hubbard
Little known factoid: His biggest early influence was Chet Baker, as was mine.
Urban myth or real?: A friend of a friend said he knew someone that once saw Freddie in a little British convertible driving along US10 in LA driving up on the inclined concrete embankment to avoid traffic jam.
I saw Freddie play a few times, in Boston in the 80s, always impressive, intimidating, unpredictable.
Master trumpeter, genius improvisor, stylistic innovator, keep of the jazz flame - Freddie you will be missed...

Agree - Red Clay is terrific. After spinning "hub-tones", put on "Straight Life" and ended up repeating track 3, "Here's That Rainy Day", four times ... what awesome tone the man had. Very sad.

I saw him in New York a few times in the 70's and 80's. A really great musician.
