Tribute to John Potis
« on: 28 Dec 2008, 07:00 pm »
John Potis has passed away, as some of you may know.
I just found out from the positivefeedback web site .
I found notice on the Bryston site here and I understand 6moons has a grand
memorial too, but I can't access it here from work.

I thought a more open forum of tribute may be good for our
circle of audio friends.

I have very fond memories of my contacts with John and my reading his
extensive collection of audio reviews.

He was my first entry into my rebirth of audio enjoyment.
I was seeking out info on the Ohm speakers and John had a steadfast love of them and Omni sound which I wrote him about.
Within 6 hours my email was answered, wow this is some new hobby I thought.
So easily conversing with the Stars, and so amiable and approachable.

My heart goes out to his family and friends, God Bless John.

I am still stunned by this. Can't quite believe that someone so young and full of life is just gone. Gone without a chance to say goodbye. I guess I've known John for at least a dozen years. Never met him in person, but had talked on the phone a number of times and had a lot of email correspondance over the years.

I don't think we'd talked on the phone for at least the last year, maybe a bit more. What I remember the most is that whenever we hadn't spoken or emailed for some time, the first topic wasn't audio, but how were the kids and family doing . . .  this went both ways.  Music and audio were passions of John's, but family was clearly his love.

My thoughts and prayers go to his family . . .

Heard the terrible news.  There was mention of cancer.
What happened?  Does anyone know more?

I heard through the grapevine that it was prostate cancer that was diagnosed very late.  He left two very young girls behind along with his wife.

Very tragic and he will be missed by many.

Honestly, his repeated reviews of the ACI speakers were so positive that I thought ACI and his reviews were some sort of rigged gimmick.  Later on I found other reviews and learned to appreciate his taste and background better.  And come to find out, they lined up fairly well with mine.

Hopefully someone out there will learn from this and take the annual finger probbing like a real man.   :o
