New Planar 3 upgrades
« on: 28 Dec 2008, 02:46 am »
Well I have added the Origin Live Advanced motor, Groove Tracer Deluxe sub platter and a cork mat to my Rega Planar 3.

I tried to set the speed of the motor in my office which has florescent lights. It appeared to me that the 60HZ lines were not moving after adjusting the pot of the back for the 33 speed. When I got it out and hooked back up it was most definitely running slow. I went ahead and tried to adjust by ear and it did start to sound better. Unfortunately my testing was cut short by everyone coming back home and wanting to take a nap.

Since my first test on setting the speed by normal light just did not work I ordered a Keystobe device which will be sent on Monday and should enable me to get the speed done correctly.

I really do hope these upgrades provide a REALLY noticeable difference in sound for me (since these are probably the last upgrades).

Excellent - have you lived with your Rega for a time to easily compare the advancements that these tweeks hope to have?

I am quite interested in the Origin Live motor upgrade....did you buy from the UK?  Std. DC100 motor and wall wart transformer...or did you upgrade these, as well?

You'll probably be stunned as the old Rega 3's had as their achilles heel that old AC motor I think....

Enjoy, John

John,

I have had it for about 4 or 5 months. There are certain albums which were played more so I will use those as a comparison.

It was the standard DC1000 motor and wall wart transformer and they  come from the UK. I just could not see spending either 185 pounds or USD (forget which was listed) on the transformer.

I am just really bummed I could not get the speed set correctly yesterday. Once that little strobe device comes I will use it with the strobe card Origin sent and get that taken care of.

Go buy a hand held fluorescent trouble light from Home Depot or Ace hardware. Close all of the drapes in the room, light up the light and your in business.

Well I got my Keystrobe device in the other day. I had to originally set the speed by the sound of the records. When using the Keystrobe device I found I was pretty dang close by ear. And yes that was only luck, no super ears here.

I must say I am very pleased with the way the TT is sounding. It does take a little getting used to with the speed though because it does sound slower that the original Rega motor.

That little Keystrobe device is very nice. It made setting the speed a breeze.
