If that is your first Calexico album, pick up Feast of Wire next. That is probably their best, but they have a lot of really good ones (I like Garden Ruin, but it is different than the others). I also like the EP of Calexico with Iron & Wine (collaborating).
Two more very excellent releases in 2008:Bob Dylan - Tell Tale Signs: Bootleg Series Vol 8David Gilmour - Live in GdanskThe Gilmour cd is not the most spontaneous or freewheeling, but the performance is certainly precise, huge sounding, and impressive. The Dylan cd is excellent both musically and sonically, with an intimate and warm acoustic.
Martinr, Ruby Mae,You guys might like Sun Kil Moon. Its not like Calexico or even the same style, but I think you'd like and appreciate SKM if you like Calexico. April is the lastest album (2008), but I'd start with Ghosts of the Great Highways.
Another band to check out if you like this style of music (vague I know) is Magnolia Electric Co. Its a bit less accessible IMO, given that Jason Molina the lead singers' voice isn't as smooth as SKM or Calexico and the songs are a bit slow at times, but the guitar work is quite good and interesting. MEC is basically Jason, and he has been a bit prolific in creating albums under MEC, Songs: Ohia (previous band) and solo. My recommendation is start with What Comes After the Blues. There is quite a lot of bands in the "country-tinged indie rock" genre that these loosely fall into. Not all are great but there are definitely a handful or more worth looking into. I wouldn't really say that SKM is country rock, but it has some folk/country/blues influences. Calexico's influences I'd guess are folk/country/americana/mexican traditonal. I like Andrew Bird, which is less of the alt indie country thing and more singer-songwriter but worth mentioning.Other recommendations include:M. WardJosh RouseBonnie Prince Billy aka Will Oldham (I only have one of his) and of course there are the commonly known alt-country acts like Ryan Adams, Wilco. Calexico has roots in Giant Sand and Friends of Dean Martinez, both of which were Howe Gelb led acts. Those bands were different sounding than Calexico but worth checking out.
