Another one for the adventurous types would be “Red Cliff Capriccio” (FIM K2 HD 076), a guzheng solo, has just been given a 2009 Grammy Nomination (one of four to receive a nomination) for the Best Instrumental Soloist Performance. It's also recorded using the latest K2 HD mastering technology.

Best Regards,

The Kooks - Konk is the best album I've heard in a long time.  I also liked a few of the other suggestions listed, particularly the new Coldplay.  I'm looking forward to checking out some of the other suggestions posted.

The final CD in one of the all time greatest Beethoven cycles has Symphonies 2 and 7. These disks on BIS Records are very audiophile worthy.

Listen to samples.

Here's a great 2008 release: A Mountain is a Mouth from Bruce Peninsula. ( http://www.myspace.com/brucepeninsula )

Described by a reviewer as a sprawling freak folk choir, their latest release is a genre-bending concoction of folk-roots-experimental-choral unison singing, with great instrumental accompaniment. It's a giant wave of creativity and not to be missed.

I got the download at http://www.zunior.com/product_info.php?osCsid=1156603700014a94d647bc729c7fcc4f&products_id=2139. Both MP3 and FLAC are available. The CD is out in February.

I agree with many of the choices so far, especially the  releases by Bon Iver, Sun Kil Moon, and Calexico (fantastic when I saw them in concert recently). You guys have covered it pretty well, and I think 2008 was a pretty good year for music.

I'll add the following to my top tier (so far unmentioned):
Luke Doucet - Blood's Too Rich
The Hold Steady - Stay Positive

Runner's Up:
Martha Wainwright - I Know You're Married, But I've Got Feelings Too
Sonny Landreth - From the Reach
Gnarls Barkley - The Odd Couple
Ray Davis - Working Man's Cafe

Those are brutal!     I guess imitation is the most sincere form of making fun of someone.   He's pretty good.

I'm a big EC fan, and love stuff like When I Was Cruel that not many seemed to like.  Saturday June 17, 2006 was quite a day for me at Bonnaroo.  Back to back to back, same stage, was Elvis Costello -> Beck -> Radiohead.   :thumb:

And no offense Mike, but the guy who did Working Man's Cafe is Ray Davies (little known genius, top five songwriters of all-time IMO). I know, I know, it was a typo, but Ray has a story from about 20 years ago where he was introduced as "Ray Day-vis" as he called it, countless times, and it dawned on him that something like that would have never happened to Sir Paul or the like.

P.S. Wes Anderson went way up in my book, simply by using some of my favorite Kinks songs (This Time Tomorrow, Strangers, Powerman) in The Darjeeling Limited.   :)

Sorry...thread hijack over...........

Another gem from 2008 was Cowboy Junkies Trinity Revisited.

Oops, you caught my typo. The Kinks are one of my all time favorite bands. I even have a "God Save the Kinks" button from the late 60's (bought new), as well as almost all of their albums on vinyl. Too bad I only saw them once in concert.

Ray's previous album, Other People's Lives, is even better than his new one.

Lizz Wright - The Orchard

Jimmy Ponder - What's New

Biggest disappointment:
Shelby Lynn - Just a Little Lovin

Best Live Show of 2008:

OOPS!
I just realized my original list only had 4, so I will fill it out with one more:

John Mellencamp  -  Life Death Love and Freedom

Never been a huge fan of his, but this one really is quite good.

What the heck...one more!

Neil Young  -  Sugar Mountain:  Live at Canterbury House 1968

This is Neil stripped down and solo as a young 25 year old.
No CSN...no Crazy Horse....no Buffalo Springfield.
Unplugged before MTV coined the phrase.

It is an intimate live performance, unguarded and open.
You can just hear the talent that eventually became the myth.
It was just after his stint with the Springfield and just before his first solo stuff.

I think many will disagree, but I prefer this to his also excellent Massey Hall, not only for a warmer acoustic, but also d/t the heavy inclusion of Buffalo Springfield stuff.
What a great band they were!

Fleet Foxes - The Vinyl version comes with the equally fantstic Sun Giant EP...  This version sounds much better than the Digital version.... looking forward to catching them on SNL this weekend!
The Black Keys - Attack & Release
Bloodbath - The Fathomless Mastery, easily the best Death Metal record to come out this new millenium.  the Production is killer, and the songs are wicked.

I'll add another vote for Working Man's Cafe and here's a few others I've really enjoyed.
Joe Jackson - Rain
Blind Pilot - 3 Rounds and a Sound
and far & away my favorite of '08 has been
Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds - Dig!!! Lazarus Dig!!!

One that's a couple years old that I stumbled upon last year and just love, has been
Paul Weller - catch-flame, recorded live at the Alexandra Palace in '05
