I don't buy alot of CDs but I did get Sonny Rollins "Road Shows vol.1"  This is made from live performances over the last 27 years with various musicians.  The artist, of whom it is said is his own greatest critic, selected  the recordings from among those made by a very big fan whose name escapes me, and his own.
Typically the cuts on this CD begin as standards and at some point he just takes off to a place that few can go.  Its not always pretty  but the raw emotion is incredible. I need to be in a particular space to listen to it.

British Sea Power - Do You Like Rock Music?
...
The Helio Sequence - Keep Your Eyes Ahead

You know I have these two, I got in trade but haven't spent much time listening to them.  Same can be said about a lot of music acquired this year.

That happens.  There are quite a few acclaimed albums or bands that I haven't connected with.  Ben Folds Five and Ben Harper are two I know you like that I can't get into.

Cat Power - Jukebox (especially that bonus album!)
Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago

Two others I couldn't get into.

I can never limit these lists to just 5, but I'll follow some of the other posters and list them in catagories:

Top 5:
My Morning Jacket, Evil Urges
Calexico, Carried to Dust
Black Crowes, Warpaint (best album since Amorica)
Raconteurs, Consolers of the Lonely
Black Keys, Attack and Release

Close to top 5, but no cigar:
Beck, Modern Guilt
Nick Cave & Bad Seeds, Dig Lazarus Dig
Thievery Corporation, Radio Retaliation
Disturbed, Indestructible
TV on the Radio, Dear Science

Couldn't get into:
Radiohead, In Rainbows
Fleet Foxes, Fleet Foxes
Vampire Weekend, Vampire Weekend
Flobots, Fight with Tools
Bon Iver, For Emma, Forever Ago

Haven't heard yet, but want to:
Ryan Adams, Cardinology
Metallica, Death Magnetic
AC/DC-Black Ice
Opeth, Watershead
Death Cab for Cutie, Narrow Stairs
Procupine Tree, Nil Recurring
Portishead, Third

Wow, a lot more Calexico fans here than I thought there would be. I only say that because they're not widely known and the music they play is kind of in its own category. Lot's of good recommendations on this thread  :thumb:

I agree with Toobluvr with the exception of Fleet Foxes and

The Felice Brothers are awesome!

Fleet Foxes - listened ten times or so and gave up - couldn't understand all the fuss.  With year end lists have pulled them back out again and you know I can't get it off the cd player.  Fabulous vocals and insidious worm their way in melodies.  Like Wilco when I first heard them and the Pixies before that it was hard work but when I got there its a keeper for me.
