Really nice 1080p for kitchen
« on: 19 Dec 2008, 04:07 pm »
I just thought I would pass on this find to fellow AC'ers.  I was in the market for a 19" TV for the kitchen.  I almost pulled the plug on a Samsung LN19A450 for around $325, which is 720p(plenty good enough for the wife watching Dr. Phil).

However, I came across a deal at TigerDirect which seems fantastic. A 20" 1080p Samsung. It features a built-in digital HDTV tuner, a 10,000:1 contrast ratio and 5ms response rate.  With the TigerDirect discount of $100, plus a Samsung Rebate of $50 and using Live.com, the total came to $234.00.  Here is the link in case anyone else might be interested:

If you do not need a TV tuner Acer makes a 21.6" 1080p monitor with built in speakers, DVI, HDMI, Composite and VGA inputs.
It is under their H series of monitors.

Picked one up for $199 (CDN).
No rebates needed for that price.

While these are good deals, I don't think they can be called 1080p TVs - they are 1680x1050.

At this size they may look just like 1080p, and may be the perfect solution for the kitchen or even bedroom, but when pricing 1080p TVs, these do not qualify.

I thought it strange about the description on the built in 1080p tuner.  Below is the quote from the TigerDirect site.  I still believe it to be a very good deal, especially for a kitchen application.

"The T200HD features a built-in full HD 1080p digital HDTV tuner, so you can watch both TV and enjoy the benefits of high-definition entertainment."

The Acer H213H is 1920x1080.
It was $199...now$249...

Picked up a T200HD for my wife for Christmas, for the kitchen/dinning area. I don't know if it is 1080 or not, I just can't see how that would matter with this screen size anyway unless you're watching from 12" away.  We haven't hooked it up to HD yet, but even SD looks pretty decent, on a par with or better than the 3-4 yr old JVC 15" CRT that cost as much a couple years ago . . . and obviously the picture is a lot bigger. It's a good looking set, but that comes at a cost. The little downfiring speakers help a sleek design but sound absolutely horrible. We're not talking audiophile here, we're talking anyone will think these sound like they're out of phase and tinny at the same time. It mght sound better if backed up tight to something.

I have a 10 foot antenae in our attic and had a contractor I was working with fish a cable through the wall before I put on the new Travertine backsplash.  We have our T200HD located in a corner on a countertop underneath a hung cabinet.  The OTA digital HD stations have a fantastic PQ!  SD is ok as well.  I agree about the downfiring speakers not sounding that good.  I mentioned to my wife we could put in two in wall speakers in our soffit. (She was not amused...) I do believe it helps where we have it located.  I listen to it in the morning before I go to work at a low volume and my wife uses it for Dr. Phil in the afternoon.  For these purposes, I have to say that we are very satisfied.

As I stated in my very first post, I was going to buy a Samsung 720p.  The T200HD is not 1080p however, I don't plan on watching Lord of the Rings in Blue Ray anytime soon on it...

Cheers,

She was probably afraid you'd get some $2,500 monitors.
