DIY BPT or similar?
« on: 26 Nov 2003, 04:19 pm »
All:

Does anyone know of any recipe for a DIY power "cleaner-upper" like the BPT, or Stealth, or similar?  I know I need one, but I can't bring myself to spend over a grand on one. . .   I built the Risch filter a while back and I thought it sucked.  So, any more ideas floating around?

Thanks!

Hantra,

Take a look at Plitron's website.  Follow the link to John E. Johnson's Secrets of Hometheatre.  There is a DIY power conditioning article and review using a custom Plitron toroid.  You can call Plitron and ask them to make one for you.  It takes a month but I think this fits the bill.

At one time, I was thinking about buying the torroid as described, and a CPC from BPT.  I thought the combination would be about the same as one of his more expensive BPT's.  I only need time and money to do it.   I may still try it one of these days.

Right now, I use an topaz isolation transformer I bought from ebay, which I rewired for balanced power.  It works OK, but I am sure there is better out there.  I added some x caps (rated for AC power) to it, and that helped a bit.

Hantra,

I've been looking at this unit for a while... never got around to buying it yet.

http://www.transcendentsound.com/power_supply.htm

The price is decent. Probably not as good as a BPT, but one has to wonder how much grunge there is to clean off the A/C line... and since this is a balanced design it should clean nearly as well as the more expensive items. It could be tweaked out too.

Something to think about anyway.

Jay S has one of the Transcendent units and I believe he's quite happy with it. Hopefully he will chime in. :)

The BPT's do use Plitron LoNo transformers, so you could roll your own and have it be quite similar to the commercial offerings. Don't forget to include the cost of the chassis, IEC and outlet's in your plan. :)

Jon Risch outlines a DIY balanced power setup using a Signal Transformer brand transformer that is not a toroid. Not sure what the current price is but he lists it as $315 and that was in '99.

One interesting note. John Risch states emphatically not to use a toroid in his balanced design. I've always found that intriguing with the high end balanced manufacturers using toroids these days. He says to stay with a regular transformer for best results.

The reason being that 'normal' transformers have a response that drops off sharply after about 20KHz, whereas toroids will pass signals up to, say, 200KHz!

Hence a toroid in your power filter will faithfully deliver HF grunge that a normal transformer cannot.
