Audiophile Holiday Songs
« on: 14 Dec 2008, 09:37 pm »
Well, the Holidays are upon us. As such, pretty much my entire family is going to be staying here in my home for about a week. My little brother, who hasn't ever quite gotten over the crap I did to him growing up; my perfectionist sister, dear old Dad, etc. We all live pretty far apart, strewn to the four corners of the country. We get along just dandy that way. This getting together thing, well, it's kinda' dicey.

So, I'm thinking the one thing that will bring us together is some really pretty Christmas and Holiday music. Audiophile-grade productions of songs we all know and love.

What songs, by what artist(s), would you suggest for putting together a world class audiophile playlist of Holiday songs?

Since I'm asking, I'll submit Silent Night by Sinead O'Conner. It's a beautiful redition.

Thanks in advance & have fun,
Jerry

I was at a Christmas party this weekend and they were playing a Josh Groban CD, Noel. I thought it was very good for Christmas music.

Cantate Domino is a classic example.  I really like their rendition of O Holy Night (Julsang).

I have used a couple of the cuts of my 2003 Happy Holidays from KBCO CD as demo tracks for years, but I don't think there is a way to get your hands on it other than used (and most of the used ones are from a later year, which contained tracks from the artists' released albums rather than tracks recorded in the KBCO studio).

A Charlie Brown Christmas - Vince Guaraldi (Unremastered)?

Maybe it's a bit of a stretch, but these arrangements don't give me the typical acid-reflux anxiety that most Christmas songs do.

Cantate Domino (Proprius) is a beautiful and audio sublime (vinyl) album by ANY stretch.  Ain't that right, Bradley.  And Larkston's recommendation is a classic that should pleasantly surprise your friends and family.  Have a good one.

Aimee Mann's "I was thinking I could clean up for Christmas"

Having adopted my wife's two extremely dysfunctional sisters,
it's become my theme song for the holidays!

Well recorded too!

On iTunes radio--Holiday category--there is a station called Winterscapes that plays some nice music at 128 kbps. Good quality sound. Enjoy!
