Wireless Music Streaming device suggestions
« on: 10 Dec 2008, 04:18 pm »
Hello,

I'm looking to purchase a functional device for streaming samples from my laptop to my stereo.  Cost and functionallity is more of a factor than SQ.  I intend to use this to locate music to buy and it's more about convenience than anything.

THanks

"SqueezeBox Classic"  aa :thumb:
$299 new. But I just saw a lightly used one in the classified ads here for $200.

I've also heard of a "Slingbox", and a "Roku" (I think) but know nothing about them.

I have played around with the Roku Soundbridge, but it was years ago with a version that at the time did not support FLAC.  I was also hearing that the DAC was not as good as the SB2 at the time.

I ended up with an SB3 (subsequently modded by Bolder to add fantastic sound to the amazing convenience).

My brother bought an SB3 too, after seeing mine in action.

The Squeezebox is perfect for your intended purpose and sounds great to boot.   :)

I use a Roku for my whole house system.  It is connected to my network and I listen to iTunes from either our main PC or my laptop wirelessly.  It works fine for background music and is cheaper than the other options IIRC.  Just watch out for some iTune updates that sometimes take Roku a few days to find a work around.

+1 for Squeezebox - it's great, I prefer the Classic due to the display over the newer Duet. You could also use an Apple Airport Express ($99), for a cheaper solution - I used it for a while, but switched to the Squeezebox which I like much better.

I use an Airport Express. As long as you use the optical out, the AE is bit-for-bit perfect to the original CD. It also has a respectably low jitter rate of 250 ps. I run an AE into an AVA T8 DAC and the sound is as good as any other transport solution I have tried. It at least rates "CD quality". IMHO.

Have fun,
Jerry
