It's the RAAL Deal...
« on: 9 Dec 2008, 05:08 pm »
... just finishing up a SOTA monitor (Accuton woofer and mid) for a NYC area customer. The RAAL ribbon tweeter is so good I can't wait to hear its' bigger brother :)

That design is next...

... Scan-Speak Illuminator and the RAAL in a monitor for Arizona.

Are you talking about the 70-10 and the bigger brother being the 140-15D Rick?

Do you know anything about the Amorphous Core?

What's the effective efficiency of the smaller and larger RAALs?  (Are they efficient enough to drive with SETs?)

Would they be candidates for an over the top line array?

Yes, those are the tweeters. I have researched the amorphous core alternative but don't have any experience with them. I think they are aimed at those that want to direct-drive the ribbons with tubes.

92db for the smaller ribbon and 95db for the larger version. Line arrays are possible with the right woofers.  :thumb:

Sorry to say but I didn't get a chance to go listen in those rooms. This ribbon is just effortless and the response curve is the flattest that I've ever measured for a tweeter with this kind of extension.

Sounds like someone has a new favorite ribbon... you like it better than the Fountek? Approximate cost of the 2 monitors above?

Better - yes - but 3x more expensive! The monitors are $4500 finished in a true polyester piano black finish.

Hi Rick

Which woofers would you look at make a line array using the Raal ribbons?

How about the Morel Supreme SCM 634, used by EgglestonWorks in their new Andra III which brought rave comments at CES 2009?

The Scan Illuminator seems to be popular with a some makers using the Raal ribbons.  Others are using the Audiotechnology woofers but these seem very pricy.
John Krutke Zaphaudio.com has compared the Illuminator with the Revelator and seems to prefer the Revelator.  The Illuminator does have a great frequency repsonse curve though and the measured Qts of 0.55 it may be great for an open baffle design.  Pity about the price though
On the other hand, the Raal designer was very impressed with the designs using the Illuminator, stating that previously he found the Revelator dull and lifeless...

A neat combo might be the new AE Speakers 6.5" high efficiency midbass with the RAAL, could net very smooth response and a 90db+ sensitivity.  Would require subs but could otherwise be stunning....

Rick feel free to steal my idea for fun or profit!

I've read a little about them but that's about it. I've never been much of a fan of Morel woofers. Their motors are not as good as Seas or Scan-Speak.

The Illuminator could be a great choice for open baffle depending on how it's implemented. The motor gives it the edge in terms of displacement so with the right tweeter and crossover point it can be a great performer. The Revelator is more flexible in terms of tweeter choice but with the RAAL ribbons I think either one could work very well.
