Powercord for my subwoofer...cheap
« on: 8 Dec 2008, 10:06 pm »

Got a good taste of the magic of powercords this weekend and so starts the obsession.
I plan on starting with my subwoofer which came with your generic type. Browsed over at Audiogon and seen used and some new at very reasonable prices such as from Signal Cable. What should i be looking for? A big fat cable? the fatter the better? I'm looking at $100 tops. I can very well see spending more on my amp and digital but for a sub? Three foot length would do.
Any suggestions here?

PM Wayne at Bolder, see if he has any demo cords around.

I used to own a Signal 5 footer, and it was good.

It was later replaced with a Bolder Nitro unit.

Not sure what he has, but well worth a look.

VH Audio Flavor 3 PC w/o a safety ground would be a good $100 choice, it's what I used on my old subwoofer that didn't use the ground pin on the AC plug. If your sub uses a ground, the Flavor 2 for $120 would be the choice. VH Audio makes good cords at very reasonable prices and I always heard an improvement when I converted all my stock cords over to them. But then again, that started me down the road to trying even better more expensive cords. You've been duly warned Emil.

Cheers,
Robin

I've used an AudioParts Audio One Reference power cord with very good success. With the Hsu VTF-2 I used to have I liked the AudioParts cable a bit better than the VH Audio Flavor 2 and much better than the "Asylum" Belden 19364 cord. In my situation, the AudioParts gave a slightly deeper, richer tone, while still being well defined. The Asylum cord was better than a stock cord but seemed rather "mumbly" compared to the other two. However, in certain cases, I do like the Asylum cord on my power amps due to the slight richness it gives to vocals. I now have an M&K VX-1250 sub and the results have been similar. Of course, YMMV.

Just buy some of the power cord from VH audio and the connectors. No tec-flex is needed, just some wire strippers and about 5-10 minutes, save you a lot of money and end up with better product. It is hardly even DIY it is more like connecting some locking banana plugs level of difficulty.

Actually her is a super effective cable to use... Attach the shield to the AC receptical side to use it as a drain. It comes with the ground in it unlike most VH audio stuff that is not $80+ a meter. (there are diminishing returns on power cords as the price increases especially if you have power filtering as the function of the cords construction and less and less to do with the achieved sound)

Then use what ever your choice of

Tools to use

http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=360-821

Instructions:

Use cutters to cut the outside insulation jacket to the length of wire that will insert in between the compression plates on the AC plugs, and then about 1.5cm past that. Due that by cutting straight down the side, and then in a circle around. This is much safer than using a knife and cutting anything inside even a little bit. On the non IEC side unbraid the shield and twist it into a wire end next to the other wire you will use for ground. Cut out any extra insulation pieces or rip-cord, the stuff that is twisted in with the internal wires. Insert the amount of wire past the wire cutters cutting point (marked 12 for 12 ga) that you want the compression plates to be making contact with. Insert it on the side with the diagonal reliefs. Clamp down with wire strippers, twist away from the wire a little and pull, it will take the insulation off. Twist the exposed wire together. Repeat on all three. Slip AC plug back piece/s over the wire, then insert exposed wire pieces into corresponding holes between compression plates. Use screw driver to tighten compression plates onto wire. Do not forget on the non IEC side to put the drain wire (from the shield that you unbraided and twisted up) in wit the ground. Attach back piece of AC plug that compresses onto the cord with insulation still on it. Do this to the other end with IEC but do just cut excess shield.

Be careful that no wires touch, and that the shield only touches ground.

Hard to get much easier or cheaper and effective for a very high quality cable. You can play with adding ferite pieces (search for ideas on that).

Well skip all of this and buy the most over expensive cable you can with the most amount of canceling noise braiding/twisting etc you can without good power conditioning so long as it is better than what I just posted, but we are talking $200+. Yeah or get some of VH audio's uber sweet three wire cryoed stuff and make your own.

good advice. You msy consider Romex as well for the conductor. powerecords can make a difference but the cost of entry can be insane . If you need shielding go for the carbon shielding, expensive and very affective. have fun. Save money and make your own.

Emil,

Here's the link for the Head-Fi power cord shootout thread. A lot of good info for varying price cords.

I think - you could stop your search where you started - Signal Cable.

I use the Signal Magic PC on my HSU VTF3MKII.
These cables were at one time supplied by Velodyne on one or more of their Subs.

Check out PS audio's cords...their entry level is under $50 and the next up around $100. Both are very nice products

Thanks a bunch guys for your efforts.

I decided to try the MAC "My Audio Cables" HC cord. Steve is giving me a good deal :thumb:
I'm already using his ICs and spealker cables so it just seems to make sense.

I may just pick up the Magic Cord also to compare.
