PS3 as a CD player
« on: 7 Dec 2008, 06:35 pm »
I'm new here but figure this question has been asked before.  Unfortunately I didn't have a great deal of success searching for it.

Long story short I have (or  had) two CD-5SE's but one of them has failed and has been sent back for the second time in less than six months.  Unfortunately the three year warranty included with it is useless as they have no means of repairing them unless by some miracle a motherboard for it is found.  I am sure this will end up being a refund situation so I thought about the possibility of just getting a PS3 and killing three birds with one stone.

Thoughts?

This is not my main setup and is in my computer room so a little fan noise isn't a deal breaker.

I've heard it's a very decent, upgradeable Blu-Ray player. Did not hear specifics about audio performance, but one can hope... after all, when PS1 had  decent sound for low $$, how bad can PS3 be?  I'm considering it for killing the same three birds....

The PS3 sounds fantastic as a CD player, because it has high quality DACs. The PS3 will also decode DTS HD tracks, so you can watch Blu Ray movies in stereo with high resolution sound. I would suggest custom making the cable. You can reuse the SCART connector, but do use high quality mil spec silver plated coax cables (teflon or kapton) and high quality coax RCAs, like the Vampire CX5s.
