music recommendation - The Felice Brothers

Been listening to these guys a lot lately.  They are throwbacks and remind me of a time in the 60s and 70s when music was fun.   (Or maybe it was just my youth that was fun?     :dunno: )

Hard to pin them down, but think a more rockin' Townes Van Zandt, or Woodstock era Dylan and The Band "Music from Big Pink", or Neil Young and Crazy Horse, or Ryan Adams, or Uncle Tupelo, or Wilco.....et al.  To my ears right up there with them all, if not better!  And that's saying lots!

Their music is rustic, roughly-hewn, organic, earthy and literate.  Their style is free-wheeling, ramshackle, loose and fun.  Sonics on their cd's are warm, intimate and engaging.  They combine lyrical integrity, musical expressiveness and a fun and rollicking style all into one package.  These guys are the real deal, and they seem to live their music...as is evidenced by their early roots and quite unique recording venues!

It escapes me why they remain so fringey and don't get more press than they do.  I guess just not "cool" or "trendy" enough.  But I'd be hard pressed to name any recent entrants into the music scene that to me sound as authentic, innovative and just plain good.

And of course, lots of live performance vids on YouTube showcase just how good these guys are.

Cheapest place to buy their music is their website.....especially "Tonight at the Arizona" which is only available as an expensive import on Amazon and elsewhere.

I have tix and am looking forward to seeing them up in Woodstock in 2 weeks.

Check em out.  Just a fun, fun band that I suspect will bring a smile to your face with each listen, and leave you wanting more as the songs bang around in your head for the next few days.

That was my impression when I first heard them..."not too bad".

Give 'em a few spins.  The Bros are incredibly infectious and likeable, and they really grow on you.

I bet your opinion will evolve to "wow!  really good!"

Check out the Amazon reviews for their self titled album.  They are spot on, and will give good insight into their sound, and why many find this band so endearing.  They are pure Americana and their songcrafting is exceptional.....plaintive and beautiful sonic landscapes abound.  Good stuff!

A friend of mine who is really into the Felice boys and has seen them live several times just sent me an email.

She describes them thusly:

"seen them live 3 times so far, they're one of my faves!"

"the cd's are good, but live is much better.  you can appreciate them more after seeing them live.  they are so much fun to watch and very talented."

"seeing them live is a very enlightening experience.  they play songs that you can't find on cd...and you can't help but dance and clap your hands!  although you can go to you tube to watch videos from their shows.  i have a  few videos from the last one, it was crazy like a hootenanny...so much fun.  i'd love to see them again!"

Great to have excellent local performers that are still relatively undiscovered and small enough that they still play intimate venues and local gin mills!  I'm pumped.....Woodstock here I come!

I heard them before.  They are "organic", down to earth music :thumb:

Thanks John!  I'll get me a copy.

Fun band. I caught one of their shows last month at The Bug Jar in Rochester NY.  Tiny club, packed room, great time. Definitely a band to keep an eye on...  :thumb:
