Hirez vs CD quality

Ok. YEsterday I picked up Neil Young -- Sugar Mountain -- Live at Canterbury House 1968
Comes with a cd and dvd, the dvd being hires 24/96.

I loaded the cd 16/44 on the computer running to SB3 -->(via Morrow Audio Dig 1 cable) Bryston BDA-1--> rest of system see below.
compared to
DVD 24/96 --> crappy DVD player -->(via old MIT  cable)  Bryston BDA-1 --> rest of system see below.

Well the DVD sounds way more lifelike and bettah. It was hard to volume match... Is this what I am to expect with higher rez formats... or maybe its my digital cable?
Must I accept the limitations of 16/44 or change my dig cable?
Any suggestions.
btw Awesome album!
