The thing that has kept me from getting the duet was the price.
But, the Receiver is not that expensive by itself, but I thought you needed the Controller to set it up.

Turns out, there is a PC program that you can use to set up the Receiver.  After that, you can control it with a laptop, blackberry, Nokia or similiar wireless device.

I bought a Duet on Ebay on Monday, with the 30% Live cashback deal, I couldn't pass it up.

FWIW, that's how I setup my receiver, works well, although I did keep it pretty basic, wired/DHCP.
