What to clean equipment with?
« on: 4 Dec 2008, 03:25 am »
Hi all!

What does one use to clean fingerprints, etc. from audio equipment such as amps, preamps, cd players, etc.?  I was thinking a product such as Windex.  Does it make a difference what is used if the equipment is anodized or painted?  I don't want to wipe off any lettering.

I've been wondering something similar...I've got one piece of gear with a brushed aluminum faceplate & two amps that are in Hammond cases with a black painted finish, I try not to touch stuff but I'd like to know if there's any recommended way to dust so I don't scratch the paint, in particular...any dusters to try that don't have any chemicals, or maybe a soft microfiber cloth?

This is what I use. Works like a charm. Do NOT use any liquids or solvents.

The best and most versatile cleaning product is a fine 100% cotton AudioCircle t-shirt available from this fine web emporium:

In addition to looking dead sexy and demonstrating your exquisite taste if Hi-Fi web forums, the edge of these shirts make great portable polishers for numerous items.  They remove all of the audiophile's worst enemies: dust, fingerprints, children, pets and smoke residue.

I'm with Crimson.  A soft flannel dampened with warm water and, if necessary, a bit of mild soap.  It's what I use on lacquer finishes.

costco has a 36 pack of yellow microfiber towels for like 15 bucks in the automotive area, I have used them for a few years with great results, If something is really dirty, Just get it a little damp with water first. Ive also used windex from time to time but have stopped since i started using the microfibers.
