Considering this for older parents as a point and shoot

I have the first of the 800 series: SD800 IS. And it is a great p&s. I handed it to my 10 year old nephew at a wedding last weekend and he was using it all night.

After a quick look at thte KR site, I do wonder where the mode dial is (movie/program/auto/review) is though on the 880.

downsides is the flash is weak. but that is typical for a P&S.

I finally saw this camera in person at CircuitCity. Unfortunately there were no batteries or they were dead - it was attached to a cumbersome cabled device.

It is tiny and looks like a winner - will check it out somewhere with a more useable display

Had the 800IS, LOVED it. It replaced an Olympus 3030 which was an awesome P&S. Someone stole my 800IS out of my car.

Replaced it with a Panny/Leica FX07. Sort of hated it. The 800IS was many times better, sorry all you Leica fans. A friend bought LX3, not much better. Big disappointment the Lumix cameras are.  Overall not so impressed with the Leicas either.

Got a Nikon D40 next. Awesome photos, even at 6MP. Glad I have it but it gets little use.

Well my GF dropped the FX07 into a strawberry daiquiri, thank goodness it didn’t survive.  Replaced it with an 880IS which is truly a great camera. Tiny, long lasting battery, quick and gets the shot 9 out of 10 times. I like the softness film like quality of the newer DIGIC 3 and 4 engine then the older ones (like the 700IS) which are a bit sharper.  Some prefer the sharpness right out of the camera, I don’t.

thanks for the opinions - I will surely get this one, now just to make sure there will not be a significant price drop
