Easy tool for precision speaker alignment
« on: 27 Nov 2008, 12:53 pm »
Targeting my new Focal JMlabs speakers has been somewhat of a challenge as they really have no straight surface to measure from. the sloped front surface is really the only reference surface to measure, but had to measure in both corners to some other reference surface.

This morning the idea hit me. I went to my handy utility drawer and pulled out a couple of small mirrors. Attaching one mirror to each speaker in the same location on both speakers, allows me to rotate the speakers inward until I see myself in the mirror, when I'm sitting in the sweet spot.

Now both speakers are aimed at the desired "Gee" spot and the sound is balanced. I'm sure you could take this method to the Nth degree using a laser pointer and a tripod....say....

Anyway, I thought this was a worth while trick that really should work with any speakers.

Have a happy turkey.

Wayner,

If you tied one end of a ball of string around a towel,
and then stuffed that behind the cusion of the chair you sit in,
you could also use the string to establish that you are equidistant
from the speakers by swinging an arc.

I do this to help tighten up the imaging.  Works for me!

Happy Thanksgiving to All!

That sounds good too, but it doesn't put the drivers into alignment. It does set them equal distance from the listener, which my method does not do. How ever, using both methods together would get you incredibly close. I didn't have to worry about distance as my speakers are on a shelf in my studio so the only things I can change is distance between and toe-in angle.

Thanks for input.

I tried this and broke 2 mirrors.

Good creativity.

I posted about that "mirror" method many years ago (even worked on a patent) and posted about it early in AudioCircles beginning.

You hit upon a method that is inexpensive, and accurate.

I knew when I could see my ears in the mirrors the convergence was "exact".

In the patent I had even added a "protractor" like mount that allowed you to converge to the degree of "off axis" response you might want.

But in the end it seemed like too much hassle to write and file for a product that would retail for less than $30, and too few audiophiles to market to.

In any event it proves great minds "eventually" think alike

A laser measuring tool is also very easy and accurate.

Hello all,
I used a small flashlight centered on top of my HT3's, worked for me :thumb:

turkey,

I used these little 2" dia. mirrors and used double sided tape to affix them to the front face of the speakers.

John, I own 3 patents. There is the old saying that creativity is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. Oh well. Perhaps Jim Salk or somebody like that could incorporate some reflective surfaces on their speakers to aid in aiming.

richidoo, I too have a laser pointer, but had no way to register its perpendicularity to the face of the speakers, which is what it's all about. The Focals are oval shape in plan view cross-section, with the front driver surface the only flat plane to measure from. That is why the mirror idea hit me.

My mirrors broke when my face was reflected in them.

This is a pretty long lived thread about mirrors and...thread.

The best tool for precision speaker alignment positioning is your ears.  If you can't trust your ears, what's the point?
