Cleaning large LCD or Plasma screens?
« on: 25 Nov 2008, 11:27 pm »
Having bought a 46" LCD I was wondering what's the best way to clean the screen.

My friend said not to use Windex. I tried using contact lens cleaner for eyes with Kleenex. But it leaves streaks behind. I would like to try using a squeegee but maybe that will scratch the screen.

What cleaning solution works that can cut through smoke buildup? And what type of cloth or rag works good without scratching the surface or leaving streaks?

When I purchased my Pioneer Plasma it came with a lens cleaning cloth like you would purchase from an eye glasses store.  Since Plasma TVs have glass screens I use and would recommend going to Walmart and purchasing one of their lens cleaning cloth and a large bottle of lens cleaner.  It is what I use and I have no problem with streaks.  Heck, if it works on eye glasses it should be fine for a glass or plastic tv  screen.

Use a feather duster, or one those Swiffer dusters. Just a quick once-over every few days and the screen should stay nice and clean.
If you must use a cleaner, make sure it's free of ammonia. Don't spray directly on the screen, but instead on a soft cloth, and then wipe. Some say combinations of water/alcohol are good...you can see some suggestions online.

These tips came from someone who works for Runco.

Microfiber cloths work great

I'll echo the comments:

- Microfiber cloth.
Available very cheap at Walmart in the automotive isle, not the houseware section, they're more expensive .

- Don't spray the screen!!
Really really bad if the liquid reaches the bottom of the screen. It can "wick" back up (inside the TV) and possibly damage the screen material. Another reason a squeege would be the wrong tool for the job since you'd gets LOTS of liquid in there.  :nono:
