dvd player settings when used as a transport
« on: 25 Nov 2008, 01:06 pm »
I have noticed dvd players settings for the digital out to be the default at 96khz>48khz. Is the sound going to be better if I set it at 96khz or would it be worse since cds are only 44.1khz. The models Ive noticed so far that default at 96>48 are pioneer dvd players. Anyone with any suggestions as to which setting i should use for best sound when connected to an external dac? The particular dac I'm gonna be using is the mhdt havana by the way

I had a Denon 2910 (which I was very disappointed with) that if I used the upsampling to 96khz the digital out would not work so I kept it at 44.1khz.  I now have a NAD T585 which I like much better.  I kept the upsampling funtion off on this also, although I have not experimented with it  on.  My dac already upsamples to 135khz(approximate don't remember the exact number)  so I did not see the point.  I think I'll play with it but I would not doubt the results will be the same as the Denon

How about trying both and seeing which one you like better?

yep, thats what i intend to do. I'll try all settings but while the dac hasn't arrived yet, its nice to be able to know in advance :D I am also looking to get some other cheap dvd player with a bypass upsampling setting like the philips players.

I bought a basic Phillips DVD player (under $100 on sale) to use as a CD transport into a DAC and it sounded awful. My old Optima portible CD player sounded MUCH better.

About the philips that sounded awful... did you turn off upsampling on the players settings?

We have had success with setting the DVD at 44 and letting the DAC to its thing.
