24/192 from Mac Pro
« on: 24 Nov 2008, 10:09 am »
Over on another forum, a poster has confirmed that if running VISTA 64Bit on his mac pro, he can get 24/192 out of the optical out. But when he switches back to OSX, he has to go back to 24/96.

Could anyone confirm this. If so, what is the hold up on OSX's midi playing up to 24/192????? as it is clearly a software not hardware issue.....

I've run 24/192 to a borrowed Fireface 400, so I know for a fact that it works. I do know, however, that without the device connected and/or appropriate drivers loaded AudioMidi will max out at 24/96.

Crimson,

do you know if the optical output of the MacBook Pro will output 192?

Thanks
Sean

I'm pretty sure both the USB and optical ports are limited to 24/96 (although Apple claims the optical port can do 24/192 but I haven't heard of anyone doing it). The only way to get 24/192 is via firewire. Also, as an aside, the optical ports on the Airport Express and Apple TV are limited to 16/44.1.

Thank you, that is what I am finding with the optical so at least I know it's not an issue on my part. I've been using the USB mainly but know that more discs are coming out at a higher rez I was revisiting the optical output.

Crimson when you used the Fireface 400 were you passing the digital to an external dac, and if so do you know if the Fireface output 24/192? According to their webpage it does but interested in your thoughts.

Thank you

No, I was feeding it 24/192 data and using its analog outs.
