Quad 63 repair in Cleveland, OH area ?
« on: 23 Nov 2008, 03:24 am »
I'm new to the Cleveland, OH area. In setting up my gear I accidentally knocked over one of my beloved Quad 63's. It fell face forward. It now doesn't play music-only makes a crackling sound. I'm obviously sick about this. Does anyone in the Cleveland area have the expertise or know someone who could take a look and/or repair the speaker. I'm also looking to meet other hifi people in the area. Hope someone can help. Thanks in advance. Brian Hemmis, Fairview Park, OH

Hello Brian,

Welcome to AC..I'm no longer in the Cleveland area in Central OH now, but you might try and shoot TedB a email. He is near your neck of the woods.
Nice speaker I'm sure that it can be repaired. The other person to call for a quick response might be Ken@ ProMusica in Chicago,IL.  Just google the store and ask for him. He is the man behind great recordings with the Naim label and an avid Quad dealer and fan.

Good luck!

Brian,
I'd say welcome to Cleveland and the West Side, but oops, sorry about the Quad injury.   :(

I'll look around.  Also I'll call Don Better, the only real hi-end dealer left in Cleveland (and a great guy).  He might know.

P.S.  I'm in Westlake, about 15 minutes from you.

Hi Brian and Ted,
I'm in Lakewood. The only time I heard Quad's was at Hoffmans House of Stereo, when it was behind Howard's house on the West side (W150 & Snow). But I have worked on high voltage equipment, I was an engineer at WCLV. If you need help let me know.
Magnetar may be able to help, he lives in NE Ohio and has worked with electrostatics.

Do you remember the movie projector in the shop that was aimed into the listening room? How about the big radio controlled helicopter? How about WIXY-1260, I was an engineer there also.

ALL of it.

WIXY is my early life.  Jerry G was my all-time favorite disc jockey.  He intro'd me to The Beatles for gosh sakes (I attended the riotous '66 Stadium concert at age 12).   :thumb: :thumb:
Somewhere in our of our many boxes I have small mini reels of tape from when i recorded stuff off the radio, and got Jerry G or Billy Bass, or Wilde Child kemp or whomever to intro the "new Beatles record".  I still remember to this day sitting in my parents house, in the spare bedroom I made into a stereo room, hearing a WIXY dj say "as promised, only on WIXY 1260, turn up your radio, here's the Beatles new record, Hey Jude".

Agreed, We need a GTG in OH sometime. I can volunteer to host one, it would include some travel for you NE OH guys though. Let me know as I'm up for something. Always interested in hearing some new gear 8)

I started a new thread.  I'll be glad to come down to COL, but many of us live up north.  I've offered up my place in January maybe?

Play it Again Sam on Madison in Lakewood.

My friend had her Maggies re-done there.

I see that "Play it Again" has moved! When I went by the old location the building was empty and I assumed that they went out of business.

Hi:

I also live in NE Ohio (Hinckley).  I am in the midst of getting my audio room up to snuff as far as room treatments.  I would love to get together with some of you guys.  Was just in Westlake today on business(La Centre) at the corner of Columbia & Detroit.  I have some gear I could bring and would absolutely love to hear some of Ted B's gear!! 8)

As far as Play It Again Sam goes, I just talked with the owner about 2 months ago.  Hard to believe they closed the place since then but could be.

Brian...Another possible source for repairing your speaker could be Audio Visions located in Strongsville.  The owners are Mike and Eric and they could possibly help you out or know of someone who could.

I think that "Play It Again" moved the store to a new location, about 10 blocks West of the old location. The old location was near Madison Park the new location is near the high school. I'll have to drive by and see if it's open.
New address is 14311 Madison Avenue (my Ophthalmologist's office is 14200 Madison)

Yes, and Bernie's still running it.  Jeff is long gone (at BB&B in Westlake) and some of the speakers there were the same ones I looked at back in the 70's.   8)

Hoffman's..gone.
Golden Gramaphone...gone.
HiTech HiFi.....gone.
Audio Craft...all but gone (thank God).
Tokyo Shapiro...gone.     (Good pedigree though.  Some of the guys that worked there now run little places like Cary Audio, Goodwin's High End in Waltham, etc.)  I used to rent laserdiscs from those guys.
