It's official.....I'm a jack-ass

For a weeks my office system, I spend 90% of my listening time with this rig, has sounded odd.  Not really bad, however, from bass to treble and especially in the mid-bass to low-mid range things sounded odd and the entire bass region seemed a bit weak.  I suspected faltering output tubes (2 6550s per side)

A bit ago while dusting my Cary SLI-80 I noticed that the left channel output was set to 4 ohms and the right to 8 ohms.  DAMMIT!  With the flick of a switch everything was back to normal.

Hey, don't feel bad. I once demo'd some new speakers for some friends. We were all rather unimpressed by the sound. Later, after everyone had left, I realized I had the one speaker wired in phase and the other wired out of phase.  :duh:  (In my defense I had recently been using a pre-amp that reverses phase.)

I did something similar while wiring up a speaker crossover.  I remember being distinctly underwhelmed with the sound.  I then flipped the wire from the woofer speaker jacks to the mid and tweeter speaker jacks and everything sounded as it should have.  I then rewired the crossover so that I didn't have to remember to flip polarity of the speaker cable on the outside of the speaker.

Cheers,
Tom
