the output isn't true balanced either, its why I don't have one, though I am looking for a nice balanced pre for my 8b.

Nor is the AVP-16/17 true balanced. I have the 16. I'd assume it's a cost vs performance decision.

Yes, cost versus performance. For P-9, balance and unbalance makes no difference especially in close range.
We are coming out with an Active Isolation Box that can also be used as RCA to XLR conversion. Target for CES demo in January.
