Best turntable for $2,000...
« on: 16 Nov 2008, 02:32 pm »
OK folks.  Haven't messed with analogue since my gerrard / technics high school days.  As I have just inherited a couple of hundred of my parents LP's (think Ella Fitz, Miles, Theme to 2001, etc) it's time.  For you analogue heads out there, here's the question.  Assuming a maximum budget of $2K (table and tonearm only), and assuming I'm willing to buy used, what's the best tt for the bucks?

I'm considering Sota, VPI (scoutmaster), etc.  Don't really want entry level, because it would be a step in the wrong direction.  All advice welcome.

Bring it!!

I own a Scout and like it a lot.   The VPI tables are highly tweakable and afford a number of upgrade paths if you're in to that sort of thing.      If I had it to do over again,  I would look hard at the Nottingham Interspace, which is at your budget for table/arm (new).

When I buy a TT in the spring, that'll be the price range I'm looking at. I've looked at Mitchell Tecnodecs, Gyro's, even used Teres tables come up for that budget on Audiogon at times.

The Scheu/Eurolab Premier looks really interesting, but even used the ones I've seen have gone for more than $2k...

Not a bad budget.  Have you factored in the need for a phono stage (assuming your preamp is not set up for phone input)?  And possible some additional interconnects?

I have a Rega 25 table (now more or less replaced by the P5), with a Shelter 501 cartridge.
I have enjoyed this table for years; a reliable table, and excellent sound (but not the top tier of resolution).

How much do you want to adjust the turntable?  Adjust vertical tracking angle, etc..
The Rega has been a reliable set up and go turntable.

The VPI's are also great tables from my listening experience.

Best of luck. There is MUCH to choose from...

The Marantz is a pretty good buy for one that's ready to go outta the box. I have an Opera 2.0 that I like really well. You can use a Graham mount or a Rega mount arm with it. But by the time you add an arm and cartridge to it your looking at almost $3K. Might look for a used Rega P-9 or a P-7. Another good one to look for is a used Acoustic Signature Final Tool. It's built like a tank, and I think it by far has the best electronic drive out there. Once in awhile you can pick up a used one for about $2K, and it's a killer table.
