Saving music in the wrong place
« on: 12 Nov 2008, 12:37 am »
Somewhere along the line my Apple G4 stopped ripping to the default library which was set up to the NAS and started saving the music files to the G4.

The name of these files go something like this:

untitled:Music:AaronNeville:The Grand Tour:01 Don’t Take Away My Heaven.m4a

Two questions:
1.   How do I get all the ripped songs off the G4 and on to the NAS
2.   How do I set up the NAS as the default library again.

I hope I’m using the right terminology here because I'm a little bit clueless.  A friend helped me set this up originally and now I’m on my own.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Hi,

If iTunes does not see your network share (NAS) it will revert to it's default directory for storing music. Make sure you can see your NAS drive from your G4, then do the following:

1. Go to iTunes > Preferences > Advanced. Change the location of your iTunes Music Folder Location to point to your NAS drive. Also Make sure 'Keep iTunes Music Folder Organized' and 'Copy Files to iTunes.......' are both checked. Click OK.

2. Go to File > Library > Consolidate Library. Click Consolidate. This will now copy all music stored on your local drive over to the NAS as specified above. (If you have an earlier version of iTunes, the Consolidate command is under the Advanced menu).

Before ripping CDs in the future, do step 1 above to make sure your specified music folder (NAS) hasn't reverted back to the local drive.

OK It worked, but it seems that I am missing some files. On some albums ( I have no idea how many) all the art work is there and the name of the songs but no music. I'm getting the dreaded ! with no information under the get info/ Summary tabs... Where: Not Available.

Do you have any suggestions? Or do you think these are gone forever?

For some reason the path to the actual file got corrupted. Double click on the tune in iTunes and it should ask you to manually locate the file. If any of the 'missing' files are on the internal HD, you'll have to consolidate again once you have located the files.

I can't find them mannually. It says under the  info/ Summary tabs... Where: Not Available.

It's doing the same thing with another computer on the network (PC laptop).

I have a backup usb drive. Would that be any help? I'm clueless on how to access that though.

Yes, the info tab will say they are not available because it cannot locate them. When you double-click on the missing track and are asked to locate the track manually, go to:

If on your NAS, under Shared:
[your NAS] > [folder name] > [artrist] > [album] > [track]

If on your local HD, under Devices:
[your local hard drive] > Users > [your user name] > Music > iTunes > iTunes Music > [artist] > [album] > [track]

Also, make sure that only one computer on your network can write to your music library with other computers accessing the library as a read-only shared resource (this is done by setting the library path in iTunes to your NAS on one computer only).

I feel like the prodigal son on this circle. I go away and then come back with problems begging for help.

I seem to still have the same problem of saving ripped music to the G4. I just recieved a message that my start up disc is full. I followed the instructions above but here I am again. Did I possibly set this up wrong to begin with?

Forums help solve problems.

Sounds like the library path was defaulted to your local drive at some point and you've been filling it up since. Consolidating a library copies the files to the new specified location. It does not move the files i.e. the files that were copied over to your NAS during the consolidate process still exist on your local drive. You'll need to manually delete them to free up space. More importantly, you'll need to figure out why iTunes keeps changing the path to your library. Meanwhile, always check that the NAS is mounted prior to starting iTunes and ripping.
