I was looking at a Vann's in Montana where I have bought from in the past and was very satisfied. They carry Sony, Pioneer, Denon, Onkyo and Yamaha. I am open to other suggestions. I welcome your opinions. Thanks

I purchased an inexpensive Philips DVP to use as a transport for my Insight DAC, and my system became noisy, for whatever reason, whenever the Philips was powered-on.  I subsequently purchased a Marantz CD 5001 for 299.99, which has worked very well.  If I were to buy another CDP for a transport, I might buy either another Marantz or a new or used Cambridge Audio or similar for an equal or lessor price.  I would just be sure to stay away from a super-cheap player that uses a switching power supply and/or introduces power supply noise, RFI or EMI into the system.  Others here have reported using a $29.99 DVP or similar with great success.

It might help to offer up more detailed info on the makeup your present system other than just stating your DAC,,, like amps, speakers, cables, whatever else you're presently using in your system? It would probaby help in gathering some system recommendations.

I sent Frank a Dyna Pat-5 and a Dyna ST-150 for a Insight rebuild and I am ordering a Insight Dac to go along with it. The speakers I have now I have had for years. They are Electro-Voice Regencys with 15 inch woofers, Electro -Voice T-35 Tweeters, EV 1823m Mid ranges. I also have a pair of EV Aristocrat's with 12in and T-35 tweeters. And thats what I have for now until I save some more cash. I know the speakers are very old but they still sound great. Would like to have a pair of Salk speakers but thats down the road. Was building Dyna kits back in the early 70's and building speaker cabinets. got the fever again after 30yrs and decided to put a killer system together but its going to take time and some advice from you guys. Thanks

Well I don't use a CDP myself(computer audio) but when I think of CD transports, the name Wadia always comes to mind. If you'd consider a used CDP, Audiogon might have some good deals. Good luck with your search.

You may want to consider very well reviewed Oppo Universal players - they only cost a couple hundred dollars

So far I've run an 'old' Sony 300 disk changer, older 200 disk Sony changer, and a relatively new 5 disk Denon changer (290 I think it is) with my Insight DAC, all without problems or extraneous noise that I or anyone else has noted. Am routing thru an Inday switcher, required as the old Sony changers only have optical for digital out. The Denon, as I'd imagine most all new decks will, has both optical & coax outs.

Being digitally challenged, am not as savvy as satfrat & many others, so haven't gotten the server/computer aspect together yet, hence the changer option. Maybe in the next year or so.

You ought to consider the other digital options (a Squeezebox Duet, laptop etc.), if you have a large music collection.

I'm using a Rotel RCD-1072 CD player with my Ultra DAC.  It's a solidly built player that sounds good on its own, although the Ultra DAC takes it to an entirely new level of sonic performance...

Stick to a CD player,,,,I have found DVD players a PIA to navigate and are real slow loading etc.

Maybe a good used CDP with a Phillips Transport and don't forget the coax out too.

I use a Magnavox DVP($49.99@Sam's Club) and an OPPO DV-981 DVP($105@WOOT, normally about $189). Both work equally well, but the OPPO is heavier and less likely to move when you use the front panel controls. The display is also larger/brighter and the remote buttons are larger. They both load much more quickly than the inexpensive Philips DVP I tried. The older Philips CDPs I owned were slightly more user friendly, until they started skipping and quit. The Magnavox loads a bit faster than the OPPO and the Pause/Play buttons work with one push every time(OPPO sometimes needs 2 pushes to Play). My understanding is the digital coax out feeds a raw digital signal to the AVA Dac, bypassing the CDP or DVP internal electronics(DAC chip, filters,etc), using only the transport and laser pickup.

$250 is a steal! I paid closer to $800 for mine; many paid more when it was introduced. Its an awesome player, built like a brick shit house. Denons best transport, excellent DAC’s, SACD and DVD-A converters and exceptional video converters. I still use mine on a 50” Plasma with great results and I’ve tried others. SACD is quite good too and as a digital transport, it’s perfect.
Try different digital IC’s, they all sound different. Is optical SPDIF an option? I have glass fiberoptical cables too that are awesome compared to most coaxial at many times the price. Also they isolate any potential grounding problems since there is no conductive connection between the transport and the DAC.

Sure but why do they make high-end transports and other intermediate components? Transports can cost thousands of dollars. Using a cheap transport is like putting a $999 cartridge on a $89 turntable like this:

Transports can make a difference. Not only do they read the disc but all the error correction happens in the transport. You don't want to skimp.

I have probably 30 different CD and DVD-ROM drives for computers around here and they all do an fine job reading brand new CDs and DVDs. Some of them do better than others but when it comes to reading old beat up CDs some do a way better job than other.
