SPDIF input cap question for CHIME
« on: 9 Nov 2008, 10:10 pm »
Adding an SPDIF input to the Chime Gold.  The chime schematic shows a 1uf cap before the switch on the SPDIF line (C415).  Can this value vary?  I assume it is there to minimize a pop or feedback.  I have some 0.1 uf, 2.2uf and 3.3uf's sitting around.  Would that work?

That value is not critical, but it does need to be big.  Also much pass very fast transient information.  Ceramics work good.  Use 1uF or larger.

I had a Solen 3.3uF sitting around and it seems to work.  Would a ceramic or a tantalum be better in this application?  Found a matching switch to the front panel switches and wired up the SPDIF.  It looks like this Chime Gold came from the factory this way!

Wow, this machine is nice.  Been swapping between my sony cd/sacd player (with hagclock) and the Chime outputs for comparison.  I can't wait to finish up the Castanet linestage to really hear this new setup...right now I just have a 100k passive pot in line for attenuation, which has to be turned almost all the way down.
