Cartridge Selection for the Newbie - Need Advice
« on: 9 Nov 2008, 09:24 pm »
I am running a Thorens TD280 Mk II with the standard Thorens arm, and a Linn K9 MM cartridge/stylus with unknown hours. The signal is running through a NAD PP-2 phono stage (MM/MC compatible). I'd like to replace the cartridge, but have no idea what to look at. My budget would be $100 - $200, and I'd consider looking at gently used pieces if I come across one (I'm in no hurry, and I see them come up for sale all the time). I listen to '70s rock, prog rock, jazz fusion, acoustical/electric guitar, etc. and like detail and a solid mid-range. I could go to another MM cartridge or move to a MC unit, but I know nothing about MC, except that they are way more expensive. What should I be looking for in terms of performance characteristics that would fit my style of music and also specs that will match up well with my Thorens? Any specific cartridge suggestions for me at this price point? Thanks!

As the offical Audio Technica AT440MLa "pimp" here at AC, that is my suggestion. It's an MM that tracks very well at 1.5 grams, plays deep in the groove (great tracker) and has a nice presentation (tho a bit of a break-in period is needed to tame the highs a bit. It can be had (with wild pricing) from $99 to $200, depending where you look. I was told someone on line has it for $99, but have not seen this with my own eyes. Otherwise Jand R music has it for about $129. I'm pretty sure you'll like it.

The Audio Technica cartridge is a great cartridge.  Truly one of the best buys in hifi.  That being said...

Are you sure your cartridge needs replacement?  Looking at the gear you have listed, I'm not sure the cartridge is the weakest link.  The K9 may not be Linn's best cartridge, but its certainly a good one.  The NAD PP2 is the obvious weak spot IMO.  Its good for the money, but really nothing special at all.  I owned one for about two years and moved on.  I'm not bashing NAD; I owned their gear for years and it has always been a great value for the money.  I think the PP2 is probably the weakest component in their line up though.  To my ears, it sounds slow, flat, closed in, overly warm and smooth, and is a bit noisy.  On a positive note, it doesn't try to go to high or low in the frequency range, and sounds pretty controlled.

Personally, I'd look into a new phono stage if the cartridge doesn't need replacement.  If the cart is worn, replace it, then look into a new phono stage.  Changing your cartridge may not give you much improvement.  Your current gear is a bit too good for the PP2.  Its definitely the bottleneck right now IMO.  Some far better phono stages for relatively cheap are Cambridge, Pro-Ject, Rega, and Bellari.  I'm sure others may add to the list.  They all sound different.

Sorry if I side tracked the conversation.

I appreciate the input on the phono stage.  Actually, I just bought the NAD, used, to replace using the built-in phono stage in my Denon AVR-4306 receiver.  So from my persepctive, using a standalone phono preamp is a step up already.  I will likely keep my eyes open for a deal on a better preamp, likely a Cambridge 640P, since I've read such good reviews about it.  Maybe I should wait on the cartridge, or try to find a replacement stylus (the K9 is no longer made or supported)?

On another audio forum someone asked the same question as you. He has
the same cart. as you. Several of the posters had the K9 and swithched.
They said it was a great improvment. I would go with Wianers suggestion
and go with the AT. It is a small invesment with big improvement...... 8)
