AV-3 & AV-3s are almost finsihed!
« on: 7 Nov 2008, 05:55 pm »
Hey all! It has been awhile since I have been on here, but just wanted to pass on some pics of my latest GR project. I built a set of LCR AV-2's about three years ago, but ended up selling them with our last house and home theater. After about a two year break, I am back on the horse.  :green: I so pleased with the AV-2s I built before, I decided to build the AV-3's this time around. I also wanted to thank Danny for the great customer service and producing a great project. I should have these wrapped up by next week. So when completed, I will post some pics. Enjoy  :thumb:

I built a pair of the AV-3's back in June of this year and have been very pleased with them. Sound quality is smooth and natural with excellent imaging and depth.Really surprised how well they reproduce the deep notes on well recorded pipe organ music. To me,it sounds like they can go down at least into the lower 30 hz range. Bass response is accurate, fast, and clean with plently of snap.Highly recommend the Sonicap and No-Rez damping option to anyone building the AV-3's if you want the best sound quality. Please note that the AV-3's like most other high performance speakers require at least sixty hours or more of playing time to really start opening up and sound their best. I certainly agree with you about the excellent customer services that Danny provides. It is really a pleasure doing business with him.

Well, I have made some progress since my last post. I have the three speakers done enough to where I can use them now. I decided to wrap the cabinets in vinyl, and veneer end caps in walnut for the tops and for the base. I should have the caps and base done by next week or so, but at least in the mean time I can use them! Here are a few pictures.

Nice job skeeler! Please post another picture when you complete the walnut caps.Did you go with the Sonicap option or standard capacitors normally provided with the AV-3 kit? Also, what is your opinion of the AV-3's sound quality so far?

Thanks! Like I said, I should hopefully have the caps and the bases done in a week or so. I just didn't want to rush those, but I will post some pics when they are completed. I did go with the Sonicap upgrade, but no rez. It has been about 2 years since I had my AV-2s, so my ears have been kind of rusty. When I first powered them up, I had mixed feelings on them, but then I had to remind my self that they haven't even been broken in yet. As of last night, I have about 10-12 hours on them, and I can hear a huge difference thus far. I am very please with them. I don't have a sub yet, but that will be my next project. The AV-3s do well without one, but a stand alone sub would make them that much better.

I don't know how that MDF will hold up in the boat.  ;)

Nice job on the A/V-3's.  I built a pair 2 years ago and they were my mains before giving them to my daughter for a wedding present.
Also, the LED underwater lights on your boat are cool :thumb:

Your AV-3 and AV-3S speakers both look great. The walnut bases and end caps really set them off. Nice work.

Thanks! As always, I am very pleased with the GR-Research product. I think my next project will be some GR surrounds. I have some in-walls I am using currrently, but haven't been very pleased with them thus far.
