Upgraded to Insight

Hi All,
This is my first posting to the AVA audio circle and am happy to be reading and participating with all the rest of you. I have been a happy AVA owner for 10 years, and just last Sat was happy to visit with Frank in his listening room. I brought in my Omega III EC pre-amp, Omega III 440H amp and Omega IV DAC, and am going to upgrade all the Insight (adding remote volume/mute, new faceplates, and re-chassis the DAC to the 17 in. wide version).   I had the opportunity to listen to some of Frank's new Insight gear with the Salk speakers, and the performance was no less than I have come to expect from Frank. His philosophy and passion for the build quality and sound (or lack of) in his pieces was well evident. I was really excited to see his ability to put the 'works' for the 440 amp into the chassis the size of the EC pre-amp !  Cool.  Frank shared a recent story from RMAF about a cable shoot out with cables and folks from M.I.T.  Salk speakers were used along with AVA hardware.......do I really need to tell you the outcome??   In true double-blind, volume matched tests, there were a lot of hang-dog faces in the room (excluding Frank of course).  I recently tried some Kimber Hero interconnect between my amp and pre-amp, and I 'believe' I heard an improvement in my system of the std RCA interconnect I had been using.  I currently use a many years old pair of 8 ft lengths of Monster cable to connect to my speakers (Magnaplaner 3.6R's). I intend to freshen these up with some good 14-ga wire from Home Depot, and add banana connectors for easy installation.  I have always found Frank's no-nonsense, and real common sense approach refreshing. I do read the audio press (Stereophile and Absolute Sound) on and off over the years, evolving from Stereo Review and Audio magazines.  It is so easy to get pulled into all the 'hype'.....

I am certain my money (initial investment, and the cost to upgrade) is well spent with Frank and AVA.  I can hardly wait for the new pieces to arrive.  Thank you Frank, for great products, and great listening for me!

Welcome to the AudioCircles and I'm sure you will enjoy the new Insight upgrades. I have the Insight EC preamp and the Insight 260ex power amp. The system is very fast (800volts per ms slew rate) and very dynamic (it may startle you at times). I prefer vinyl and the phono option board for the Insight is very, very good. Your 440 amp will be brutal!

Enjoy your new system.

Welcome Mark!   It would be interesting to hear how you like your updated gear once it is in your system.

I was really taken aback on how good Frank's HK turntable plus longhorn Grado sounded in his system.  That relatively modest setup was pretty amazing.  It made me spring for the AVA phono section so I could compare with my current phono stage.  If I can get music that good from my setup I will probably rethink the turntable upgrade I've been shopping for lately.   The phono stage I had upgraded to in anticipation of getting a more expensive turntable/cartridge combo made such a nice, unexpected improvement with my current setup that I've been questioning whether I really needed to go after the model I had intended to use it with, and hearing vinyl in Frank's system just made me question it more.

Terry your comment are incredibly timely.  I have been thinking of start a thread to discus this very topic.  Would you please post your impression of the AVA phono section as compared to an external one.  I'm really enjoying the music passing through this circuit and can't really think of no reason to change phono sections except by upgrading to an Ultra pre with phono section.  As a matter of fact I'm hearing a astonishing amount of detail with highs that go on for ever and rock solid bass.  But still would like to hear what others think.

Ric,

I would like to - some day a couple months out though!  I have only heard the phono stage in Frank's system and my equipment is in the process of being assembled (maybe 3 wks out yet), so I'd be talking way out of line right now.    I expect a number of the more experienced folks here can offer you their impressions sooner.

Ricmon,

The phono section in the Insight preamps is killer. Perhaps the best vinyl I have ever heard. Now with my new Focal JM-Lab speakers, the depth of the phono board is becoming even greater. Frank told me that just his stand-alone Ultra phono option is incredible, too. Lots to choose from. Call Frank.
