Fun with my wife and aftermarket powercords
« on: 1 Nov 2008, 03:16 pm »
Just had a session with the wife involving powercords.

System: Rotel CD>VAC pre>DAC Cherry (classD, massive linear transformer) amp>SPTech Mini speakers. Music: Fagan's "Morph the Cat" on burned gold CD.

A week ago I was absolutely floored by the difference I heard between a Black Sand Silver Ref MKV (W/ Oyaide 004s) and "stock" 14 ga powercord.  I'm a cable believer but would never have expected the amount of difference I heard.  After being without power for more than 3 days  :( I was eager to get Sharen's ears in to check this out.

She did not know what I was switching, just that I'd bend over the system for about 10 seconds between listenings.

Her impressions: She assumed that I was switching between sources or amps (since the DAC amp was sitting on a Sunfire), the difference was so profound. She heard much greater separation between the instruments and a lack of a homogenized, non-descript haze that was present with the stock cord. She also commented that the decay on the triangle sounded mangled w/ the stocker ( :o She does NOT read any audio reviews and came to this seemingly tweako audiophile characterization on her own!!). Add to this her unsolicited comments about the quiter background... sheesh she's good...

Then I told her I was switching powercords but she misunderstood and thought I was changing interconnects - She was all like "Arrrgh, I hate you, I can't beleive there is this much difference in an interconnect..."  No, honey, this was the powercord - The thing the music doesn't even go through - The 6' of wire between the power co. and the gobs of wire in the amp.

Ok Ok, "there must be something wrong with the amp..."  "There must be something wrong with your power ..."  Whatever.

It happened, although I am told that this experience does not in and of itself give me permission to purchase additional cords!!  :lol

Yes there is a difference.

It drove me to bring all my Volex (old) up to Rcrump standards (solder & terminations).

Then a month after that I started with the MAC cables as he was offering good auctions on AGON.

That led to 5 MAC PC purchases but I get to move the Volex to other systems.

From what I've read over the years I would caution you not to get started because it seems to be like crack.  Once you pop you just cant stop!

Risque title, interesting post that pushes home again the notion that PC's, especially on digital amps, do make a difference.  I'm kind of glad I'm powercord-less at the moment (RWA Signature 70.2's are my new amps), but I have had somewhat similar experiences.  Not with your wife, but on my own...with my own cords.  Listening to music.

You are a fully peaked BS meter source John Ryder. Your BS never fails to amuse. :rotflmao:
