Ten compositions . .
« on: 24 Oct 2008, 11:54 pm »
for all time or interpretations that continue to get a hold of you no matter how many times you hear them.   Ones that make you tear up, hoedown, interrupt coitus to turn up on the radio.  Personal classics I guess is another way of sayin (ones we might recognize).  Here's ten from me that never quit . .

Pretzel Logic- Steely Dan
Tramp- Lowell Fulsom
Out Of This World- John Coltrane
Would You Go- Jane Siberry
Smokestack Lightin- Howlin Wolf
I Only Have Eyes For You- The Moonglows
Nessun Dorma- Giuseppi Di Stefano
The Man I Love (messed that up the first time)- Miles Davis
Tensions- Charles Mingus (Moanin, too)
tie:  Monkey Man and Miss You- Rolling Stones

runner ups: Claire de Lune- Debussy; Pledging My Love- Johnny Ace; Sara Smile- Hall and Oates.

What gets you?

Who is DatD?  Gil Evans also does Little Wing beautifully.  Almost thru in his arrangement of Spoonful.

Derek & the Dominos :)

I've never heard the Gil Evans version, I'll have to hear that.

Jeez, this is an impossible task, narrowing it down to ten. Oh well, here's a random list:

Child's Song - David Bromberg
Icy Blue Heart - John Hiatt
Suzanne - Leonard Cohen
Third Uncle - Brian Eno
No Kinda Dancer - Robert Earl Keen
Born - Over The Rhine
Jerusalem Tomorrow - David Olney
Holding Back The Years - Simply Red
I Am The Ride - Chris Smither
Choctaw Bingo - James McMurtry

Nope, sorry, can't narrow it down.    Here's some more:
The Charity Of Night - Bruce Cockburn
Los Endos - Genesis
Europa - Santana
Now She's Blonde - John Scofield
Marie - Townes van Zandt
Gentle on My Mind - Glen Campbell
Time To Go Inward - Rodney Crowell
Invitation To The Blues - Tom Waits
Hope There's Someone - Antony and the Johnsons
Fade Into You - Mazzy Star
Fear Nothing - Kevin Montgomery

There are many others, but this list was easiest, and true! Haha...

Radiohead - How to Disappear Completely, Exit Music for a Film, Reckoner, Weird Fishes, Everything in it's Right Place, Pyramid Song, Last Flowers to the Hopital, Paranoid Android, No Surprises, Bodysnatchers...

Hell, I suppose I could have easily just stated "Pick any 10 Radiohead songs" and made this list even easier still...

Try A Little Tenderness (ZLS).  Gets me everytime.  Ditto Slinco.  If I didn't know Leonard Cohen's Suzanne, I knew a Suzanne just like he describes in a fine song, indeed.  She was a dancer from Denmark.

Anybody have trouble keeping their butt still or body straight when "Hold On I'm Comin" airs?  If this were a topic about sad songs, at the top of my list would be jazz singer Carla White singing an adaptation of Langston Hughes' poem "Dream".  It's merciless.  Just sayin.

In The Still of the Night
Your Cash Ain't Nothin But Trash
I Got A Woman
Gangster of Love
Boom Boom Out Goes the Lights
Money
Sittin and Thinking
Further On Up the Road

Of course, ya seldom if ever hear those around anymore.  I genuinely remember only three white tunes while in 6th grade.  Rock Around The Clock, Vesti la Giubba (Leoncavallo), and Gun Battle, etc. (Copland).  The last two at my next door neighbor's house.  A dyed in the wool bohemian lady with a big Motorola console who used to tolerate my one BB King album (re-released on Virgin, BTW).
