ripping for apple??
« on: 23 Oct 2008, 04:45 pm »
i've been ripping my cd's in itunes ( i'm a Mac only user) and the squeezecenter isn't finding all the albums etc or any of the artwork.  i've got about 1000 orphan tracks floating in there?  i'm looking for suggestions of how to get this to work well or other options.  also i found that lossless is NOT, so i only rip as wav files, but doing this through itunes is unsatisfactory. i understand there are some programs that help you rip bit perfect and let you know if there are any problems with the disc...   like most people i don't find tinkering with computers especially fun so it would be great to find something that is clear and intuitive.....   please help!  i'm hooked on the sound i can get from the duet, it totally outperformed cd's at the RMAF!

thanks,
lou

lou,
sorry to let you know that album art is not possible with .wav files. Curious why you chose .wav over .aiff? On mac .aiff is the bit perfect copy of a cd. All my music is in .aiff and album art can be linked to each CD.

Did you happen to change the default location for your 'iTunes Music folder' in Preferences > Advanced?
Note that if you use an external drive as the folder location, if the drive is powered OFF iTunes will place ripped files in the Music folder. Not being a Squeeze center user not sure about not finding files....could be the location of maybe file header problem?

Crimson will likely have some further insight into this.

Good luck

I use MAX on my Macbook to rip FLAC for my Squeezecenter/Squeezebox setup.  Seems to work really well so far.  Lots of suggestions here though...

Id just rip Flac or Alac and save some space...

Use this--->

The program is the bomb! And its free! You can donate of course.
Plus if you have a quad processor it will convert 4 songs at a time. Dual 2 songs. So its fast.

The above link is XLD... I should have said.

You might also try XLD available from  http://tmkk.hp.infoseek.co.jp/xld/index_e.html  It uses a somewhat different approach to checking for bit perfect rips. Also, a program called Fluke ( http://cubicfruit.com/fluke/ ) allows you to play flac file within iTunes. I've recently started using both. I'm not sure the rips are any better than with Max but it's too early to tell. I do like the ease of playing flac with iTunes. Max and XLD both allow you to download album art.

Like Tom, I used MAX for quite a while after purchasing my first Mac.  However, I've used this process since finding it a while back.

The reason for the switch didn't have anything to do with being unhappy with MAX, but I like the extra control and documented errors with xAct.  I now only use MAX when I want to convert files, but I use xAct for my ripping needs.

I have tried Mike's preferred ripping program, but I'm interested in knowing in what ways (if any) he believes it is better than MAX or xAct.  So what say ye, Mike... why do you like it better?

I guess I like it better.... speedwise, if you are on a multiprocessor, which most are.. And that its drag and drop. Set up the file type, final location, or have it automatically added to Itunes. All in a single drop.
Convenience and speed.
Mike

So if you had a Dual Quadcore... 8 processors, thats 8 songs at a time. Sweet!

Hi,

Seems like you have two issues:

1. Ripping: The suggestions mentioned here are great. I use both xACT and iTunes for ripping, Max and iTunes for converting, and iTunes as a front end. Squeezecenter does support AIFF.

2. 'Missing' files: You have two options here:
a. Consolidating your library in iTunes (Advanced -> Consolidate Library), then have Squeezecenter rescan your library. I'm not sure, though, how this will affect art/tags etc. associated with your WAV files.
b.Since you're using Squeezcenter, you may want to consider dropping iTunes altogether and rip to AIFF using one of the other rippers mentioned in this thread, while maintaining consistent directory structure.
