Diaphragm Replacement on Tweeters
« on: 21 Oct 2008, 08:40 pm »
Just blew a Morel tweeter and ordered new one from Renaissance Audio. Should I buy a replacement diaphragm and try to fix old tweeter ? Heard some bad stories about the "ferro fluid" and how the tweeter will never be the same. What do you professionals say about this? Cost of new tweeter was only about 18 bucks more than diaphragm.
Thanks

If you blow a tweeter, it's usually the speaker coil that fails.
I'm quite sure it makes the best option to get an entirely new tweeter, just to be on the safe side.

Morel tweeters in my experience have had serious QC issues.  I've even had a brand new pair of Supremo 110's that came with motor assemblies way out of alignment and rubbing like crazy.  Fortunately their customer support is good.

If you have a Morel that's known good, I'd say best bet is to replace the diaphragm instead of risking it with a new driver.  Do you know the tweeter you have uses ferrofluid?  It might not ... and even if so it's not something I'd worry about.

And what glue should be used, or is it supplied with the diaphragm kit then maybe?

There's no glue, the entire dome/coil assembly is one piece ... and is a piece of cake to swap out.  You just unscrew the faceplate and it drops out, new one drops in.

So easy ... well, you know

I ordered  a new diaphragm replacement for my MD-20 that didn't fit. I later sold the Morels for a much nicer pair of SEAS.

Say, what type of speaker is this anyway? The one that blew a tweeter I mean.

Yes, I know that SEAS is a speaker driver manufacturer. (It and I share a passport you know!! )
I was thinking of the speaker from whence the busted Morel tweeter came.

What kind of speaker could that be?

Oh ya, I forgot you are a Norweigen! (I'm a half breed (Swede/Norweigen)). Eat Lutefisk. ummmm, Lutefisk!

Morel (Isreal) makes a whole series of domed tweeters from about 60 dollars a pair up to 300 dollars a pair. The more popular models are the MD-20 and MD-30 but they have a set I think they call the IMPERIALLS    for about 3-400 dollars a pair (matched to very tight tolerences.

The speaker in question is a model 201.2...Great sounding speaker...I had a tube go in my preamp and it took out the tweeter...The model of the tweeter is the 29.5...I removed the diaphragm already and there IS ferro fluid used...I kinda push these speakers and they DO hold up very well...I have complete new driver coming in...
Thanks
