On Wall speakers for plasma tv watching
« on: 21 Oct 2008, 06:56 pm »
I'm looking for a pair of on wall speakers for my plasma.  I would prefer the vertical bars for the form factor and depth issues but I could be swayed.

This is for a second system in the bedroom.  It really isn't a system so much as just the desire to use  external speakers vs. the ones in the television.  This will mostly be used for watching news shows and things of that sort later at night.  I have no plans beyond 2ch at present.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Never heard them but if I wanted that form factor and style I thought I'd always go with a pair of Magnepan MMG W's.

You didn't say if you have a receiver - but if you don't a quick and relatively inexpensive alternative would be to get a set of computer-type speakers like say from the Logitech line or even the Altec Lansing BX1121 <-- at Wallyworld for $30. Plug them in the headphone jack of your TV and leave them on and turned up and use your TV volume to control the level. Simple, cheap, effective...

Have you thought about wall painting speakers that Klaus Bunge of Odyssey Audio had been showing a year or 2 ago?

"Odyssey's Art series of loudspeakers hang on the wall like... well, like art. Pictured here is the Canvas High End ($1,950/pair) - 26 X 22 X 3.5 inches."

I'm not sure if Klaus still has them available but I'd ask him if this was what you were looking for. :D

Cheers,
Robin

Hi Dean,

Try this link to Home Theater Direct.

I use HTD in the walls for my H/T system, and have been very pleased. HTD customer service is excellent also.

Totem makes a line of on-wall speakers designed for use with flat panel televisions, although I've never actually heard them:

Vienna Acoustic makes wall mounted speakers.  It is the SCHÖNBERG line.  I heard it and it sounds really good for it's size.

Since this doesn't sound like a really demanding application, what about a simple DIY project like this?

the guys at work here use def tech mythos.  i think they sound great for the price. i don't know if you have a silver tv, but if you do you should grab silver ones...the silver color on all def tech speakers is being discontinued so they're giving great pricing.

best,

Is anyone aware of decent quality separate speakers that you would attach to the plasma (sides) and can be powered by the TV? (ie not require a separate amp)

I have a Panasonic Plasma 50" commercial monitor that does not have built in speakers.  They do offer a $500 accessory speaker  that mounts on the left and right outsides of the monitor but they look like cheesy cheap oem car stereo whizzer speakers.  I bought them originally but sold them when migrating into a Salamander synergy cabinet thing and started using a zvox speaker in the a/v cabinet below.  The OEM versions look like this http://www.solidsignal.com/prod_display.asp?PROD=TYSP50P8WK&xzoom=Large#MORE

I now am looking to reclaim that a/v cabinet space and get speakers to mount on the plasma again.  I do not wish to spend $300 to $500 to buy the panny accessory speakers unless that is the last resort.  I wouldn't mind even a DIY project if such a thing exists that is of superior quality.

Thanks,
Kenreau
