Cheap single driver full range 5.1 system....can do?

I'm looking to throw together a small, quick and easy diy 5.1 system for occasional HT use for about $500 (sans subwoofer).  After much scouring of the net for diy designs, I think I may have it narrowed down to the FR125SF full ranger from CSS.  At $70/channel(driver) with minimal filter component expense I should be sub $100, can this be beat?  Anyone have experience with this full range driver?  Any other recommendations for a full range single driver speaker with parts budget of $100/channel?  Here is the design I have in mind CSS  Speaker to be driven with a Panny SA-XR57

Thanks
c.

That'd definitely be a good place to start, although with those cabinets I think low bass extension in bass-heavy soundtracks may be limited somewhat. Larger floorstanders like BIB's would extend lower, and would provide an easier transition to a sub if you do decide to get one in the future.

Some of those PartsExpress DIY "thingys" look pretty attractive.
If memory serves, they had 5.1 build plans and parts list recently.

Honestly before i read this post i thought of same driver.  At least with a single driver that is.  I assume you want to stay single driver?  I have built some 4" fostex systems for less, but the CSS has nice power handling capacity so i would take it over the fostex drivers (bass should be better).

I was actually looking at some of these boxes earlier today....

LG

Weird, we have crossed paths many times today   I was all set to do the CSS FR125 driver speakers and then I ran across these from 8Ball Audio, I wish I would have never seen them.  Walnut cabinets on Stainless stands, hats off to that guy!!!!

Yeah and I have more questions for a later date...

I will say the look good; really good.  Nice sense of style.  I wonder what drivers are used.  That and they are less than $100 per speaker?

Thanks,

Looks almost like a Tang Band full range. They're not bad, a solid low-budget choice :) TB has a big line of stuff, Parts Express sells a lot of it...

As cool as those cabinets look, I wouldn't expect much midbass :(

Not going to happen for $100 or less, he is using Jordan JX92S drivers at about $175 a pop but they sure are sweet looking.

Ah, I thought to myself that they looked like Jordans, but I figured LG was saying that they were less than $100 instead of asking if they were, whoops :P

There's a TB 4" that has a cone almost identical-looking to the JX92S.

If they were less than $100 i would have to order a set on principle. :thumb:

The only other question i have is does it have to be a single driver?

Thanks,

A friend of mine's build log for a pair of BIB's for FR125's :)

One of these days if I have an amp that has enough power I'd like to try some.
