Niteshade Audio: Photos of Past Projects
« on: 14 Oct 2008, 10:43 am »

There are several more photos to come. The Baldwin/Fisher combo turned out to be an impressive amplifier. Fisher 500C output transformers are fantastic quality while the Baldwin transformers and chassis proved to be exactly what a  35 watt/channel 6L6 amplifier deserves. All kinds of reserve power! The frequency response is linear without a hint of low-voltage sag fatness or other anomalies thanks to the dual 5U4 rectifiers.

Stay tuned for more...

It's not too often that such an old amplifier makes it through time this clean and well preserved. The knob on the power transformer's bell housing is a primary tap for selecting 110,115,120,130v line voltages. All the insides were replaced. Gutting took around a day! How does it sound? Sweet! Very clean and natural with a fantastic bass response, clear highs and a perfect midrange. Power output is set to around 8 watts/channel. She runs very cool and quiet.

These amps are some examples of my Classic Series rebuilds.  Making vintage equipment come alive is a thrill! Having unique equipment can't be a bad thing. There are several more photos to come that will be placed on my web site and lsited here as well.

Yeah, keep the pics coming Blair.  :thumb:

Are you doing restorations of vintage amps too?

I've a pair of those Baldwins in my basement.  I'd suggest dumping the 12AX7 paraphase for a "real" driver stage.  But the power supply is fantastic - choke input with huge iron.

What did you notice about their paraphase circuit? I'm still testing them. I noticed some white noise and believed that control over the woofer is a little unnatural.

Boris,

I have restored a few. It depends on what the state of the majority of components is. If they look weathered, have heat rash or condensation damage- then everything is gutted. Some amps are constructed so that it's difficult to unravel the leads. I don't mess with those unless it's just a few caps and resistors. Doing a 100% rebuild with the manufacturer's original circuit is feasable too.

I wonder how many hours it took to assemble something like a Fisher 500C?

Its great the you can arrange the tubes in different ways. I like them clustered like you have them pictured above in the Le-100a.

There are several tube configurations available. The NS-100 has a single row with a driver tube in between the the tubes its driving. Keeping the power tubes separated as far apart as possible increases their lifespan. Having a dual row works well as long as the spacing is adequate. A few months ago I did a 5-tube stereo amp that had a "V" configuration. Looked great!

An Amp I made around 2006. GIANT output iron promotes signal purity. This amp was rated for about 30 watts per channel and the iron is rated for 60 watts.  :D

Our designs are diversified electronically and physically. Some of these, such as the model listed above this post was created using a vintage box. Pre-punched sockets in all the right places plus heavy gauge steel make for an excellent UPS-proof amplifier that looks great!

Most of our new products center around a 17x10 steel enclosure. It's big enough for several all our models and provides room for different component configurations.

If you would like something special- let us know!
